Rep. Michele Bachmann, a tea party favorite, will not run for the No. 4 GOP House leadership post, as she said she would.

The WSJ reports:

House Republicans dodged another potentially damaging leadership fight when Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, a darling of the tea party movement, abandoned her bid for the No. 4 post in the House hierarchy.

Ms. Bachmann ended her campaign by announcing her “enthusiatic support” for Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, who was passed over for the Republican Conference chairmanship two years ago as part of a power play by Minority Leader John Boehner, now the speaker-in-waiting.

Her announcement Wednesday means Republicans avoid an internal election that threatened to alienate tea party activists who helped the party regain its majority in the House.

That's unfortunate. I really like her. She's articulate and smart. Exactly what the Republican party needs to explain and convince the American people of conservative principles.

I hope she's going for some other leadership position that allows her to do that.

Good move by Bachmann. Her profile is going to be high enough as it is and she can show us her stuff by trying to build this Tea Party caucus into something real. Hensarling is quiet and top notch. Best of all, though, is that all the intraparty squabbles are going to be among Democrats.

I admire her wrecking-ball politics...though she does seem a bit smarmy from time to time. Not so sure that I can imagine her in a leadership position --seems more like the gadfly than the horse itself.

Shrewd move on her part. Not that she couldn't do the job, but the GOP Establishment doesn't exist after 2006 and 2008, so we were left with a rump that was pretty conservative. Hard to replace one.

Though, just for symbolism, Tea Partiers should get some top position. Just to recognize a basic truth.

Very wise move on her part, and I am sure that she got some promises in exchange, which is fine. But the bid was a bit presumptuous in the first place, and I am glad to see it settled amicably, at least in public. I'd rather see the other side in a civil war than our side.

Hensarling is one of the good guys. I don't know what she was thinking. Next step, get Jeff Flake on appropriations.
