And yet I still hope it's not Romney...

More seriously, though, I'm sure this has more to do with Bella than with his electoral prospects. I will pray for his family.

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
That's a good idea. I hadn't realized something had happened.
Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
I agree- I hope everything is alright.
I always liked how much liberals hated him- maybe Mitt Romney should post something on TakiMag, he really needs to make progressives disgusted by him.

If he's dropping 0ut for her sake, that can't be good news about her. I hope it is for purely political reasons.
Prayers either way.

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
From a Tweet from Michelle Malkin:
'Bella is a "fighter," "doing exceptionally well" -- @RickSantorum'
Made just a few minutes ago prior to this posting.
I suspect more it's seeing the writing on the wall. Romney is closer and closer to victory, and Santorum's wins are becoming fewer and farther between. The next round of primaries takes place in the northeast, which is likely to be strongly Romney. I even had doubts Santorum would take his home state. If his campaign's internal polls said the same, it may be why he'd step out of the race.

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
This first thing I thought when I heard this is that Bella's condition must be worsening. Sadly.
Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
Whatever you want to say about him, that campaign was amazing. With almost no infrastructure - and routinely treated like a joke by even conservative pundits -- Santorum beat out a ton of people. He made it until April, for crying out loud.
Considering the limitations in place by having almost no professional staff or, say, a polling firm, he did a great job of conveying his message.
What I think is funny is that he specifically said he didn't like libertarian voters (of which I am one) and yet because he explained why, it didn't really bother me so much. It didn't really bother me at all, in fact. (His voting record did ....) It shows how standing on one's principles can really be an effective strategy for conveying an important message.
When he began this campaign, I couldn't have had much worse feelings about him. Today, as he ends it, I have respect even as I disagree with some of his policies.
And that speech he gave when he won Iowa was one of the better speeches I've heard.

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
Bella was my first thought as well. I hope she's doing better.
Santorum isn't my candidate, but I have tremendous respect for him and his family. I wish him the best.

I hope this is because of his campaign flailing and not his daughter.

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
I actually was more impressed with Santorum before the campaign. I would hear him on Bill Bennett's show and found him not nearly the finger-wagging jerk I had found him to be while in office. Unfortunately this campaign erased a lot of that for me. He became the preachy, whiny, out of touch gadfly again. He deserves credit for getting so far, but I think that's as much a testament to the field as it is his abilities. I hope for the best for his daughter, but I'm glad I won't have to see or think about him much for awhile. This primary process has been a real drain on my interest in politics and it has not been a very good thing for the GOP, I don't think. Time will tell.

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
My first thought wasn't with Bella Santorum, glad to be reminded of the important things! I'm glad she seems to be doing well, best wishes to her and her family.
However, my first thought was "Is Peter Robinson OK"? :)

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
I admire him much more than I did at the beginning of the race. And I'm grateful for the potent witness he gave of how far conviction and principle and guts and grit can still get a person in American politics, even without money and in the face of the scorn of the establishment.
I so hope Romney will make a point of reaching out to Santorum's supporters.

Is it time for the final "Well, All Right."

I agree. Time for uniting and the candidate must lead the way.

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
Santorum lost his last race in Pennsylvania by double digits - he couldn't afford to lose another one in his home state which would've happened in the upcoming GOP primary. These guys all have internal polling so Santorum knew he was behind in PA even before Romney brought out the big guns.
Santorum is a run of the mill politician who benefited from being the last NR standing after everyone else imploded. He has some good qualities - great family man, etc. - but I won't miss his whining, that's for sure.
Oh and PS - he will not be the frontrunner for 2016 if Obama wins in the fall. The GOP has far better choices wating in the wings.

Gotta get in one last nasty swipe, eh?

Re: BREAKING: Santorum Out
Santorum was my candidate, and I'm glad he's getting out. It's time we all got some perspective. It's time we get our priorities straight. Rick has a role to play and it obviously isn't as the GOP nominee this year. I still think he would have done better with Reagan Democrats (the few remaining), blue collar laborers, evangelicals, and others than Romney, but it wasn't going to happen.
Romney is gradually encouraging me to believe he understands the scope of our problems is well beyond the economy. The deficits, debt, transfer payments (35% of income?), pending inflation, stock market volatility, and other indicators are superficial signs of the underlying cultural rot. People are shameless about their dependency (I spent some time at the County Citizens Service Center (DMV and redistribution center) yesterday). The atomic family unit is atomizing. I think Sanotrum understands this better, but I think Romney is catching on. We're in serious trouble. We need to get Romney elected and God bless him. If he wins, he's going to be scapegoated for the coming crisis. It's still the right thing to do, even if Obama gets off relatively unscathed.
