CORRECTED: The Jerusalem Post just reported that rockets were launched this afternoon from Gaza toward Rishon Lezion, which is 10 miles south of Tel Aviv. There were no casualties. Sirens went off in Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gedera and Gan Yavne. IDF tanks shot into Gaza and targeted a Hamas facility in Gaza City, which was reported destroyed.

I'll keep you updated.

And so it begins.  I've been waiting for the unrest in the Middle East countries to finally move against Israel.  There has been so little reporting of the missles launched into Israel in the past month that the US media should be ashamed.

And I would add the following.

And how long before Mahmoud Abbas asks the UN Security Council for some of that R2P, days , weeks, for protection against Israel?

Judith:  Are you sure it isn't those fun-loving Hamas guys celebrating with fireworks?

Seriously, I don't know how you live with the day-to-day threats from people who haven't the least problem killing at random.  Isn't it about time for Cast Lead II?  The world will vilify Israel, but you have to do what you have to do.

And, remember, you do have friends, if not reliable allies.

It looks like Hamas wants an out from its unpopular mismanagement by forcing Israel to reoccupy Gaza. I hope Netanyahu is smart enough to make the aim of any new military operation the capitulation of Hamas in Gaza without reoccupation of Gaza: pounding the Strip hard enough and long enough that the Gazans agree to unconditional surrender, after which the Israelis turn Gaza security and pacification over to the PA.

You really think there is a difference?  The PA wants the same thing as Hamas, only Hamas is more competent.  And perhaps less personally corrupt.

"You really think there is a difference?"

Yes, Israel, there are several practical differences. Hamas has a lunatic leadership sitting safe in Syria, making their Gazan leadership vulnerable to pressure to do essentially suicidal things; the PA doesn't have that foreign-based superstructure. Hamas has no apparent technocratic capability to run an economy; the PA seems to be capable in that area. Hamas doesn't care for international acceptance as a normal, secular, peaceful state; the PA desperately wants that recognition (although it doesn't want actually to BE secular or peaceful).

But the main point is that Israel should not get sucked back into occupying Gaza, and the way to avoid that is to crush Hamas in Gaza (too bad about collateral civilian casualties, but those are on Hamas's head) and then to send in the PA as the occupation force. Let PA security people, not IDF soldiers, be the proximate targets of Hamas resistance.

UPDATE: While a Grad missile did in fact land in North Ashdod, it has since been clarified by the authorities that reports of a missile fired at Rishon LeZion were a false rumor.

Muqata - http://muqata.blogspot.com/ - says the IDF went into Gaza an hour ago.  he adds "I'm sure Goldstone is already preparing his next report."

Heshmon, I have not heard this, and have not found confirmation either among the news outlets or on the IDF Spokesperson's site. Where did you read it?

Judith Levy

Wait, Heshmon, just saw it on Arutz Sheva. It's weird, though: their notice is time-stamped at about 4 pm, but it's after midnight and the IDF still hasn't confirmed that the Rishon attack was only a rumor. Peculiar.
