The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested a 20-year-old Saudi student suspected of planning a terrorist attack using explosive chemicals in Texas.

The FBI said his possible targets included the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush.

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, attending college near Lubbock, Texas, was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Federal prosecutors say he had been researching online how to construct an improvised explosive device using several chemicals as ingredients.

Federal authorities say Mr. Aldawsari's diary indicated the young man had been plotting an attack for years and obtained a scholarship so he could come directly to the U.S. to carry out a jihad.

Mr. Aldawsari is expected to appear in federal court in Lubbock on Friday.

I assume the MSM will report that the man is a "South Asian," that the police are searching extremely hard for a possible motive, and that the words "Islam" and "Koran" are never mentioned.

At least the WSJ has the courage to use the word "jihad."

It would have been nice if this man was denied a student visa and had been barred from the country. Is there any way to do this?

One would think that during the immigration process a few red flags would have been raised based on..

1. His native country

2. His religious beliefs

3. Any history of anti-American sentiment

4. Any ties to Islamist people or teachings

Although, I suppose screening immigrants for the above criteria is racist, illegal, unconstitutional and just wrong.

Anyone supporting the castration of our intelligence/military/federal law enforcement agencies, and believing that a warm hug will solve everything, needs to read this over and over.  This is the kind of resolve we face from violent radical Islamists, and we'd better learn to counter it with the same fervent belief that we are right.  I'm not holding my breath.

Isnt there a special program for young jihadis to be able to come to our country and study under the tutelage of the assembled religious scholars in Dearborn, and other centers of Islamic study ? I thought Keith Ellison had instituted a program ??

I know that flight training is no longer an elective, but the ROTC program is probably still open at Ft Hood.

Sorry to be so cynical, but I'm with JC, no point in expecting squat from this crew and their groping in the dark, DHS.

What benefit accrues to the citizens of the United States by continuing to issue visas to citizens of Muslim countries?  Let them educate their own miserable offspring.

Hooray for the good folks of the Texas High Plains for nabbing this guy.  Had he chosen Austin for home base instead of Lubbock, he might have remained invisible.

What reason is there for a Saudi Arabian to be pursuing higher education at South Plains College in Levelland?  The blowing sand and oilfields to remind them of home?

Agreed. The Muslim student visa pipeline should be shut.

The rules for visas are there, sadly not enforced even in the most meager terms.

Just what will it take to clean up the sysytem, Sorry, silly question.

Terrible thing to ask folks to do the job the which they have been assigned.

Not to mention it would put a crimp in a college's diversity, which seems to be the number one goal of schools today.  Read the press release from every college as they announce their admission & yield rates.  The first sentence states "This is Harvard's most diverse class in history...."

Where did the scholarship originate??

My wife, who had been a dentist in Russia, was accepted into the University of Pennsylvania's special accelerated program for foreign-trained dentists in 2002.

Before that time, the program had primarily accepted candidates from Europe, East Asia and India.  No one on staff could recall any candidates being accepted from the Middle East, where the quality of training is inferior.

But, following on 9/11, the university enthusiastically accepted several candidates from Jordan and Saudi Arabia.  At a welcoming picnic, I happened to engage the Middle Eastern candidates in conversation.  To a man, they all expressed their hatred towards the United States - while at the same time confessing that their goal was to obtain their DMD's, marry an American Muslim woman and avail themselves of the benefits of American residence.

Re, Kenneth...Add a reflection from history in the US college years of the early 70s.

A number of  Saudi Arabian students arrived, all driving new Pontiac Firebirds, spent money like water and chased every blonde in town. The arrogance and contempt with which they veiwed everyone else was amazing.

In a nutshell, what an odd love, hate relationship exists... Timeless.

Says a lot about Saudi homelands...

Wilber, I never witnessed such intense hatred of America as I did from Iranian students at my college when the Shah was being kicked out.

Think of all the lawyer fees that could have been saved in this kid had just been caught trespassing at night.

Seriously, I hope the kid wisens up while locked up, but I doubt that will happen considering the way we pander to these would-be killers.

In other words, government bureaucrats felt a need to prove they're not racists; then proved they are.

Somewhat hard to respond to, do feel that visas should have been cancelled and folks sent home at the time. Save that means standing up for something that would be inconvenient for the officials. Still a love, hate thing, that prevails to this day.

Whats the fix...

Kenneth: 2002 ... Saudis ... following on 9/11... To a man, they all expressed their hatred towards the United States. Feb 24 at 11:26am

In the year or so after 9/11 the Saudi numbers were ghastly: internal polls showed 95% approval for OBL among men, ages 25-41, according to leaked documents. That number dropped a few points every year, until around 2006, when it began to plunge dramatically. Currently, approval ratings for him are estimated to be between 10% and 15%.

The kingdom with some U.S. assistance has been cracking down on radical clerics and undertaking curricular reforms; Saudi society has tasted the bloody consequences of the monsters it created; there was horror at the sectarian violence in Iraq.

We're just down the road from Lubbock, and I've got lots of Saudi students, mostly Shiite and lower middle class. They detest the clerics as much as I do. I talked to a lot of them today. They were crushed by this. One broke down in tears. They couldn't understand how the kid hadn't been flagged in the vetting process for the scholarships. Everyone well knew the implications for the availability of student visas.

IPT has copies of the DOJ press release and complaint.

The case looks solid. Excellent work, yet again, by the agents in the Dallas division of the FBI.

Their hatred was strongly directed against us students, much more so than Carter. They despised us and would loudly and rudely attempt to take over class discussions, berating the American way of life.  They were wealthy and privleged international kids taking spots in a state engineering university that served commuters from Newark and its suburbs.  They were not freedom loving students frustrated by the changing American foreign policy.  They were truly dispicable.
