A 1-kilo bomb just went off at a crowded bus stop outside the convention center Binyanei HaUma in west Jerusalem, which is opposite the Central Bus Station. This particular bus stop is about a two-minute walk from the hotel where Claire and the other Act For Israel fellows were staying last week.

Reports indicate that the bomb was either tied to a telephone pole or left in a bag near a public phone. No deaths reported so far, but at least twenty-five are injured, at least two critically, and people are still being taken from the scene on stretchers. Casualties are being taken to Hadassah Hospital in Ein Karem (where, parenthetically, I gave birth to my first child).

Road access to Jerusalem has been closed and the area of the bombing is being scoured for further devices. No one has yet claimed responsibility.

How long should Israel tolerate this?

As long as we have to, Bryan.  We aren't going anywhere.

Am I wrong in saying this breaks a lengthy lull in terror activity?  Sure, Israel's had plenty to worry about meanwhile, from Iranian nukes to a lukewarm ally to Turkish humanitarian gunrunning flotillas.  But as far as direct attacks, it seems like it's been a while.  And now we've had two attacks in quick succession.

Any reason for this, or just the law of averages catching up?

Boy, do I like the sound of that.  Very, very nicely said.

I don't know what to say. My prayers are with the victims and all of Israel.

Little time has gone by from the murder of the Foggel family and now this. My sympathy goes out to the injured, their families. I am deeply worried for Israel.

It breaks a lengthy lull in terror activity in Jerusalem. It's been about three years since there's been an attack of this magnitude in the capital.

In fact, about three years ago, they fired all the bus security people and disbanded the unit.  The fact that there had been no bombs on busses was supposed to have been proof that they weren't needed.

And note that there have been rocket and mortar shellings of the major southern cities all week.  A few injuries, but no one is interested in making a big deal about.

This was my take on Bryan's question.  That it's never ending.

Jonathan wrote this in another thread yesterday and I have to say that when I read stories like this one I sometimes feel the same way...

Jonathan Matthew Gilbert: ...Every time I read about another shrapnel bomb in Israel, I find myself wondering if perhaps the best solution is just to shove most of the people in Gaza right into the sea ...

Andrea, this may not actually be Gaza.  Shelling southern cities - now that's Gaza.

It's been said before that part of the problem with the peace process is that Israel keeps making concessions, and the Palestinians keep demanding more while only promising to "renounce terrorism." Someone needs to tell Mahmoud Abbas that "renouncing terrorism" is not a concession; it is something civilized people just do.

Charles, there are actually people in Israel who have always said "why land for peace?  How about peace for peace?"  Like civilized people.

Oh, sorry.  I wasn't paying attention to that part as much as applying the same idea.

It was an expression of pain and anguish. I want Israel to live in peace. They deserve it. God blessings on his Chosen have not meant they have had an easy road.
