He's going back to Chicago, where the ethical standards are higher than in the White House.

At the very beginning of the week?  No effort to bury it on a Friday?  Particularly after all the holidays are over?

This officially qualifies as Deeply Weird.

My guess is that Obama blatantly lied to him. For a Chief of Staff, that's the final straw. They'll put up with a lot, but not that.

Not particularly surprised. In November, the WSJ reported that Bill Daley had ceded day-to-day management of the West Wing to Pete Rouse.  It basically seemed like a demotion then that they were terming a "shift of roles" just to save face.

The recalibration of Mr. Daley's portfolio, agreed to by Mr. Obama, is designed to smooth any kinks in the president's team as it braces for the overlapping demands of governing while campaigning for re-election, people familiar with the matter said. The West Wing is preparing for budget battles with Congress and is seeking to use its executive powers more extensively.
The new set-up effectively makes Mr. Rouse the president's inside manager and Mr. Daley his ambassador, roles that appear to better suit both men's talents. Mr. Rouse served as interim chief of staff before Mr. Daley arrived, and his White House bio boasts he is "known as the '101st Senator' " for his extensive knowledge of Congress.

Perhaps, but I also suspect life with Val Jarrett and Meesh isn't all that fun either.

I heard Daley speak to a small gathering back in the nineties when he was in Clinton's cabinet.  Based on that one experience, I was impressed that he had talent and at least the appearance of some ethical standards.

Given that, when he became Obama's chief of staff, it didn't seem like a good fit.  I too hope the "real" story gets told, the sooner the better.

He presided over  the dramatic shift to the "right" that was predicted when the President appointed him...if that was a shift right it wasn't even Stalin to Trotsky. I think I read somewhere that he'd run afoul of Harry Reid and gotten used by that wonderful paragon of statesmanship. One can only hope it reduces their effectiveness somehow.

I'm surprised Obama's environmental lobby hasn't kicked up more of a fuss about the noxious fumes coming from the bus the President just threw him under. Its like a sauna under there.

Harvard, developed the Americorps ( most recent attempt at government press gangs for urban youth ), and a Clintonista. Probably a good campaigner too, because this is all about the campaign and executive power grabbing. This is your man for that. Orszag evidently had a personal life or two to attend to, so Jacob stands ready.

And as a former COO of Citigroup Alternative Investments, the 1% is very well represented.

I felt when Daley was recruited he was going to be Obama's Wall Street fundraiser.  Perhaps the downtrodden banking industry doesn't have the finances to make beg donations to the President's campaign?

It could be that that was the plan.  It doesn't sound like it was working out though.

Since nothing is ever Obama's fault (the ceaseless demonization, the endless new regulations, etc.), Billy goes under the bus.

They're going to need to replace the shocks on that thing pretty soon.

All together now:
Won't you go home, Bill Daley?
Won't you go home?
You've whined the whole year long.
Go see your family, buddy,
Your time here's spent.
I know I've done you wrong.

You know I'm to blame
Now, ain't it a shame.
Bill Daley, won't you please go home?

How ever said this guy could cook ? I guess I thought the Obama's could afford a much better Chef of Staff ? How about that Alice Walker ? My SF friends tell me she is a top chef out there.
