In the most controversial op-ed I've read today, Keith Koffler at Politico says that cats are Republicans. And dogs are Democrats. Here's how his argument begins:

When cats are born, they believe they are in a state of liberty, and from then on they are determined to keep it that way. No one tells them what to do. They don’t believe it takes a village, because they know they might have to take instructions from the village idiot in the local government.

And, sorry if you’ve got one and you’re a Republican — but dogs are liberal Democrats. Some are possibly Socialists, though probably none will ever admit it.

Dogs are communal by nature. They run in packs. They dream of their days as wolves, sharing responsibilities.

I don't know. Something sounds fishy. (My fish are Constitution Party, for what it's worth.)

While I prefer cats to dogs (although growing up out West, my cats were always the type to chase the dogs), I've always believed felines have a sense of entitlement. Dogs, on the other hand, work for their keep even into old age. They're loyal. Deeply conservative creatures. Cats are elitists. They love drugs (well, catnip). Clearly they're liberals.

What do you think? Is Koffler right? Are cats Republicans? It might explain why Rich Lowry and Margaret Thatcher prefer them. And why do I imagine Claire sitting with one of her kitties, stroking his fur and laughing right now?

Cats. Only because cats act more like grown-ups, and dogs act more like children.

This reminds me of a joke. If you want to see who loves you the most. Lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car for a couple of hours. When you open it, which one is happy to see you?

Dogs are nothing if not loyal (Tea Party). Quit feeding your cat for awhile; they'll be at the neighbors' (Democrat) in no time.

Have a nice weekend, Mollie!

I don't know about cats and dogs, but I do know My pot-bellied pigs are affiliated with no party and are truly Independent.

I like dogs, but whenever I've seen dogs and cats fight, always with the dog starting it, I've never seen the dog win. Sometimes it's a standoff, but standoffs go to the little guy.

I disagree with the basis of the article.  To put them in context of our world politics should be set aside.  Placing them in the context of the business world would be more accurate.

Cats are entrepreneurs, therefore, employers.  They are fiercely independent and completely unable to take direction and work in concert with others.

Dogs are employees.  They are good at waiting, working and eating when told, and love to work and play hard.

I ran Madisonian philosophy by my wire fox terrier this morning and he took a more Jeffersonian tone towards the relationship between man and government. What does that mean?

I have have to agree. In our house we always referred to the pets as Demo-Dogs and Republi-Cats.  To add fuel to the argument, in our shared faith home we've also decided the Dogs are Catholic and the Cats are Jewish.  Our dogs? Elmo and Scotty Fitzgerald. Our cats? Freddy Feinberg and Sylvia Steinberg.  The fish and turtle were agnostic.

My cat is a firm believer in supply and demand.  He demands and I supply.

I take the view that the first pet mentioned in Herodotus is the natural conservator of Western Civilization.

I seem to remember Mr Rob Long stating to Ann Coulter and Peter Robinson on "Rino Intervention" podcast that all dogs were communists but never explained. We need Rob to shed some serious light on the issue.

Denise Moss: ...and the Cats are Jewish.

I can see the dog in confessional (if he's an Irish Setter) but I have a question about Jewish cats... Do they refer to neutering as an overaggressive bris?

Well it's raining cats and dogs where I am today and they all look pretty much the same to me.

I humbly refute Mr. Koffler by referring you to my Ricochet posting of February, "Cats Are Marxists. Dogs Are Capitalists." here, hastening to add that a good Republican could (or should I say should?) never be a Marxist while begrudgingly accepting that many Democrats can be very adept capitalists despite their pangs of social justice guilt.

Like Democrats,  Dogs demand much time and energy and attention.  They also behave like Democrats when they leave unwelcome messes on my lawn.   Cats take care of their own mess.  They even bathe themselves.  They are more selective than dogs in their choice of companions and are fussy about what they eat.  The self reliance is a very conservative trait.

.....and do Romney's disparaging comments about Obama's "dog food" make him (Romney) more or less Republican?
