Yep, I was fooled. And so were all the others in my Mets-loving family. It was 1985. I was 13. My brothers were 17 and 18. We all read Sports Illustrated, rabidly.

In honor of April 1 and Mets Opening Day, I give you the one, the only, the classic, Sidd Finch.

I'm worried that BLS' good news -- that unemployment is down to 8.8% -- is an April Fool ....

And here's a good April 1 announcement from Gmail!

I once saw Sidd throw a fastball through the backstop.  That kid had filthy stuff.

This fellow Met fan was equally fooled, and utterly dejected when it turned out to be untrue. And I can't claim youthful exuberance, like you can - I was 23.

And from where I sit right now I can see Plimpton's "The Curious Case of Sidd Finch" in my bookcase. A fun read. If only...

This part of the story may be so well known that I'll sound foolish for even mentioning it, but the first letter of each word of the subtitle of the SI story spelled out "Happy April Fools Day."  Some readers supposedly caught that at the time.  I say, baloney.

Vance, it would've been a rotation of Finch, Finch, Finch, and Finch.  I think his unique motion, the motion that gave him such firepower behind his pitches, also put zero strain on his arm and so he would've been able to pitch every day.

Jeez, never mind, I keep forgetting - he wasn't real...

I hadn't thought about that piece in years Ursula, thanks for the reminder. I was also completely fooled, & told a bunch of my fellow fifth-graders all about how this guy was going to dominate baseball. I also told them that Georgetown was going to destroy 'Nova. That title game was quite the April fools joke in its own right.

Fortunately, my family moved that summer so I didn't have to deal with the fallout from my wrecked credibility. BTW, Happy Birthday to number 2, Rick O'Shea, and me.

Thank you for remembering, Palaeologus! I'm coming off a back-to-back birthday week and I'm spent. (And my money is all spent, too.). Eldest on Thursday, No. 2 on Friday. Now a wee break until the Easter bunny comes. Eek.

The Mets Money/Suck ratio is such that no jokes involving the team have any charm.

"The Mets are dead to me."  I want to care, but just can't bring myself to.  Also, the Mets without Shea Stadium kinda makes them even more alien. Guess I really am a conservative...
