I admit that I have been feeling a bit down lately.  However, Peter's post on optimism (below) spurred me to look around for something hopeful of my own to report.  You know what?  I only needed to remember the inspiring freshman congressman representing my hometown.  Read John Gizzi's piece on Retired Army Colonel Allen West and smile.

west

“Over this past week, I have watched and listened to members of the House of Representatives from across the aisle.  I am appalled at their arrogance, belligerence and dishonest rhetoric filled with empty platitudes.  Have they no shame realizing that their inept, incompetent failures are the reason we are debating this continuing resolution?  They failed to pass a budget during the 111th Congress.”

No, that was not some angry blogger venting on his website, nor an acidic  radio talk-show host. That was Republican freshman Rep. Allen West, writing to his constituents in Florida’s 22nd District (Palm Beach-Fort Lauderdale).

How can we lose in the long run while the United States of America still produces patriots like Rep. West?

Lt. Col. West is my preferred presidential candidate so far. The man oozes integrity, courage and historical awareness.

It's too bad his first political role comes at a time during which he can accomplish very little (since anything the House passes will be vetoed). But he has proven himself in the military and he can prove himself further in Congressional committees.

I am heartened by Rep West. and RIcochet and Drudge getting 30 million hits a day and Krugman having to explain his chosen isolation and Fox getting more viewers and Rand Paul complaining about toilets and James O'Keefe taking down NPR and the Tea Party and people finally, finally realizing that public unions are a bad idea (again !) and the wholesale movement out of oldstream media to here and unrest in the ME and Claire reminding us about Samuel Johnson (and GOD) and on and on.

I am sorry that when confronted with the opportunity to recognize these things on the podcast that everyone looked at their shoes and grumbled, so I guess I'll go listen to Derbyshire instead.

Courage needs a stage too. We have a wonderful play to act in. Come on kids ! Let's put on a show !!

For what it's worth I'm a big fan of Congressman West and I'm proud to say I contributed to his most recent campaign.

Jack, as I understand it, "Michael Savage" is a nom de radio.  He was probably trying to sound aggressive--"Savage Nation" and all that--whereas I was born this way.  Nevertheless, everyone should support Allen West.  I am heartened by his success.  Fort Lauderdale is not a conservative stronghold by any means.

From what I've seen he is a superb spokesman and I pray that a significant portion of the Black community comes around as a result of folks like him telling the truth. I am hopeful because the other side has run out of other people's money to spend the only remaining question is how world markets deliver the 2x4 to their nose.

Watching Col. West in the campaign and after was a bracing experience.  He, more than any other (IMHO), seemed to get it that the folks he needed to vote for him could take him telling the truth about himself and his Iraq experience.  That they could take an honest assessment of the current state in Washington without the "on the one hand/on the other hand" type equivocation.  I love the fact that ANY citizen of the United States can bring a grievance but they'd better be ready to back it up if he disagrees.  He is yet another of our military that causes me to ask, once again, "Where do we get such men?"

Normally, I'd be reluctant to tout a relative newcomer for the presidency.  But I hold out hope that Colonel West, if he ascended to the office, might transform the American political landscape by gathering a significant portion of the black vote into the conservative fold.

Stage name "Savage". I know Michael since the 1970's. Aldous Huxley was one of his favorite authors and as I recall "Savage" is the name of the rebel protagonist in "Brave New World." I think there is also a famous botanist with that last name. Michael did botanical research in the South Pacific, so that was another factor as is the one you mention. Savage Nation has at least 8 million listeners last I heard from Talker's Magazine and I think he is number 3. However, Michael is much more intelligent and better educated than the others and he is more broadband talking about literature, history at times in a very original way. Also, at times he is very funny - a natural comedian. He is very enthusiastic about Colonel West and has also been meeting with Donald Trump who appears on his show.

Yes, Colonel West could beat Obama in 2012 in my opinion especially if the following allegation by Cashill turns out to be true that Bill Ayres ghost wrote "Dreams."

I like West despite that.

Everything I have seen of the man so far tells me he has studied the enemy and fully understands the situation in the US in a way most of these pin heads never will however long they stay in office. A West/Walker works for me today. Or save Walker for the OMB Director slot. Have Romney bounce from Department to Department, shutting the dunsel ones down. We can make him the federal government's own Gordon Gecko.

Apparently, too many quality system problems going on for too long.  Medical device and pharma companies are subject to government audit to ensure quality.  You have to be able to prove that you are making what you think you are making, which is harder than it sounds, requiring bulletproof procedures, disciplined execution and lots of fastidious documentation.
