When I first heard of Andrew Breitbart's death, I didn't believe it. At all. I was hoping it was some kind of sick joke. But it's been confirmed by the LA Coroner's Office. He died shortly after midnight. Here's what is up at Big Journalism:

With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.

Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.

We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.

Andrew recently wrote a new conclusion to his book, Righteous Indignation:

I love my job. I love fighting for what I believe in. I love having fun while doing it. I love reporting stories that the Complex refuses to report. I love fighting back, I love finding allies, and—famously—I enjoy making enemies.

Three years ago, I was mostly a behind-the-scenes guy who linked to stuff on a very popular website. I always wondered what it would be like to enter the public realm to fight for what I believe in. I’ve lost friends, perhaps dozens. But I’ve gained hundreds, thousands—who knows?—of allies. At the end of the day, I can look at myself in the mirror, and I sleep very well at night.

Andrew is at rest, yet the happy warrior lives on, in each of us.

What a terrible loss for his wife and four children. And for the rest of us, too.

God rest his soul.  He deserves a good rest.

And now I feel a sudden urge to wade into a large crowd of protesting lefties and start screaming at them to stop raping people.

This doesn't seem possible.  But I have to believe Andrew knew people didn't like him, so he better have a plan B tucked away in a drawer.  My bet is that the Obama college tapes are safe and will still be released.  It would be Andrew's great satisfaction in heaven to watch his work continue on and contribute to Obama's defeat.

MJMack: So weird, I was just listening to him on Hugh Hewitt last night. It is so strange to find out someone who sounded so passionate and full of energy just a few hours earlier die so suddenly.

I just finished listening to that maybe five hours ago, and he and Larry O'Connor were guest hosts for Dennis Miller's radio show essentially all of last week and also hosted his show during CPAC.

During the past month on Dennis' show he had interviewed people like Herman Cain, Thaddeus McCotter, George Allen, Jim Inhofe, Robert Dornan, Steve King, Tim Huelskamp, Chuck Woolery, Paul Babeu, and John Nolte.

He mentioned some really scary stuff on Hugh Hewitt show last night.

Orson Bean's son-in-law.

He saw Clarence Thomas' nomination hearing and decided to start questioning a few things.

Rest in Peace Happy Warrior Andrew Breitbart.  You'll be missed.

Andrew's last tweet: "I called you a putz cause I thought you werebeing intentionally disingenuous. If not I apologize."

That is a nice summation of the man.  Profane.  Scrappy.  But also kind.

Iowahawk (David Burge) put it best when he eulogized in a tweet: "A generous, kind, patriotic goofball who had excellent taste in the people he chose to drive insane."

My initial thought when hearing the news was selfish: "My world is going to be so much less entertaining without Breitbart in it."

My second thought was: "The conservative movement has lost an irreplaceable warrior."

My third thought, the most important to consider at this time, was: "What a terrible loss for his wife and children."  My deepest condolences to them.  I hope they gain some comfort by the multitudes who will express their love of Andrew through the media and by turning out for his memorial.

My heart breaks for his wife and children.  May they find the strength and courage to carry on after the loss of their loving father and husband.

Condolences also to all those on the Ricochet team who were good friends with Andrew.

Heard the news on my drive into work this morning and it was conveyed quickly by the talk radio DJ I was listening to at the time.

I'm still in shock. What a happy warrior. What a good man.

His family should know that he was much loved by those who love this country and will be remembered. A fitting tribute would be to at least show a compilation of his best moments in a video at the Republican National Convention.

I suppose the rest of us need to step up a bit more to fight the good fight and carry on his work.

Gut-wrenching.  I spent the first half-hour this morning searching about hoping against hope that this was just some sick joke perpetrated by a louse.  Sadly, not the case.

Very sad and I will keep he and his family in my daily prayers. He's passed the torch to all of us and we owe it to him to keep the torch for freedom and liberty burning.

Like many others, I didn't believe it when I first read it. Such very sad news. There is no one that can fill the void he leaves behind. My prayers go out to his family.

May we all do our very best to live out, even in the privacy of our homes, what he so publicly fought for.

RIP  I always enjoyed his appearances on TV, as he gave as good as he got, often giving better than that.  He was very inspiring.

Douglas: The comments at MSM sources are already filling up with "There IS a god!" stuff. The party has begun on the left. Not that I expected any different. · 3 hours ago

You can't expect the Left to have common decency in these matters. They have demonstrated their grotesqueness before. All we can do is thank God for a good and courageous man who made a difference to his family and his country and ignore the stupidity the other side will spew.

Actually, my favorite tweet so far comes from AceOfSpadesHQ:   "I seem to notice that Hell only exists, as far as the Left is concerned, when a conservative dies."

Even in his passing, Breitbart reveals the Left for who they truly are.
