When I first heard of Andrew Breitbart's death, I didn't believe it. At all. I was hoping it was some kind of sick joke. But it's been confirmed by the LA Coroner's Office. He died shortly after midnight. Here's what is up at Big Journalism:

With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.

Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.

We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.

Andrew recently wrote a new conclusion to his book, Righteous Indignation:

I love my job. I love fighting for what I believe in. I love having fun while doing it. I love reporting stories that the Complex refuses to report. I love fighting back, I love finding allies, and—famously—I enjoy making enemies.

Three years ago, I was mostly a behind-the-scenes guy who linked to stuff on a very popular website. I always wondered what it would be like to enter the public realm to fight for what I believe in. I’ve lost friends, perhaps dozens. But I’ve gained hundreds, thousands—who knows?—of allies. At the end of the day, I can look at myself in the mirror, and I sleep very well at night.

Andrew is at rest, yet the happy warrior lives on, in each of us.

What a terrible loss for his wife and four children. And for the rest of us, too.

A reminder that the grim reaper will come for us all -- even for the few who seem blessed with unlimited energy and genuine passion. This will not be easy for his wife and children. Having to go it alone is the nightmare of every parent. May he rest in peace.

This makes me so sad. I wish Andrew could have known first hand the tremendous respect, admiration, and affection nameless allies and admirers like me had for him. Eternal rest grant unto him,O Lord. And may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

MJMack: So weird, I was just listening to him on Hugh Hewitt last night. It is so strange to find out someone who sounded so passionate and full of energy just a few hours earlier die so suddenly. · 15 minutes ago

I had just finished his section of the podcast from last night's show.

It didn't register for a few seconds -- I guess it still hasn't.

I looked at his Twitter page a few minutes ago, it looks like he was fighting the good fight against internet morons to the very end.

I am sure he's already starting an alternative news outlet to combat the one headed by Walter Cronkite and Peter Jennings. Andrew Breitbart, RIP

He was truly a man of great courage and conviction. We need more like him on our side. R.I.P.

Oh this is so terribly sad. This man was a true crusader for us; one who was fearless and stood against the insanity. I feel a deep personal loss despite that I never met him. I recall his near-comical striding to the podium on the day he exposed Anthony Weiner.  But Andrew was a serious  man who broke stories no one could have imagined. We will miss him but we must step up with the kind of courage he always demonstrated. God bless his family and Rest in Peace dear Andrew, you earned it!

This seems impossible.

Since I didn't know Andrew or his family personally, I have to admit that my first thought was: "He is irreplaceable for us."  Our most courageous field general, first into every breach.

Heartfelt condolences to his family.

Andrew made being a conservative very, very fun.  What a loss.   May his memory be a blessing.

My wife went to a political conference in St Louis last year at which he spoke.  Her somewhat older friends kept wanting her to ask him to unbutton his shirt a bit to take a picture, so obligingly, after her and her friend got a picture taken with him, I duly photoshopped Burt Reynold's furry chest from some 70s photo (hopefully Google wasn't logging THOSE searches for AdSense!) onto the pic, rather well, I like to think.  Still makes me chuckle, although I'm sad Mr. Breitbart never saw it...maybe God downloaded it in heaven for him, I certainly imagine He has admin rights to my computer.

Passed him in the hallway at the hotel later (what can I say, I'm sheltered, so a brush with even minor celebrities is impressive to me!) and he was with his son.  He seemed like a good man and a good father, and he will be missed.  The Weiners of the world may sleep sounder tonight, as they have lost a great nemesis.

Wow! Didn't expect to read this when I logged on to Ricochet this morning. I remember some of his early appearances on Dennis Miller's radio program (usually along with his father-in-law. Miller would always refer to him as "young Mr. Breitbart"). He was not yet a household name, and I had no clue who he was, but appreciated his passion.

And that passion will be missed.

So, do I.  It's just so awful.  I wish rejecting it made it not true.

We have lost a lion. RIP.

At the last CPAC, I think it was, Andrew teased that he had some revealing (and damning) video of Mr. Hope and Change in an earlier and more candid light, and was waiting for the moment to release it. I wonder now if that video will ever be seen.

When Winston Churchill was asked about death he said he was more than ready to meet his Maker... Whether or not God was up to the ordeal was another question.

But God knows all of us, and knew of us even before we were born into this world. We can only take solace in the fact that there is a reason why he called Andrew home at this time.

We measure a man many ways. If Andrew is to be judged by the quality of his enemies, he measures well.

Just heard the news, and feeling shocked and  crestfallen.

I'm thankful for all he contributed to our public life and the conservative cause. His provocations, energy, and vision will be missed.

I add my voice to those also praying for his family in this time of loss and grieving. God rest his soul, and give them peace.
