Andrew Breitbart, Rest In Peace
When I first heard of Andrew Breitbart's death, I didn't believe it. At all. I was hoping it was some kind of sick joke. But it's been confirmed by the LA Coroner's Office. He died shortly after midnight. Here's what is up at Big Journalism:
With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.
Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.
We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.
Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.
Andrew recently wrote a new conclusion to his book, Righteous Indignation:
I love my job. I love fighting for what I believe in. I love having fun while doing it. I love reporting stories that the Complex refuses to report. I love fighting back, I love finding allies, and—famously—I enjoy making enemies.
Three years ago, I was mostly a behind-the-scenes guy who linked to stuff on a very popular website. I always wondered what it would be like to enter the public realm to fight for what I believe in. I’ve lost friends, perhaps dozens. But I’ve gained hundreds, thousands—who knows?—of allies. At the end of the day, I can look at myself in the mirror, and I sleep very well at night.
Andrew is at rest, yet the happy warrior lives on, in each of us.
What a terrible loss for his wife and four children. And for the rest of us, too.

Wow.. I just saw this on Drudge. How is this not front page news?

Edit: I hope the left has the decency to not gloat about this, but I won't hold my breath.

This is a shocker and a great loss for conservatives. Breitbart was absolutely fearless in staring into the jaws of the lion. Deep sympathy for his family.

I too was hoping some lefty had hacked BigGovernment.com. The suddenness makes this all the more difficult to comprehend. I know I should be grateful for all the things Andrew managed to do in his short life, but I can't help but feel the loss of what might have been. Fate can be capricious.
My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Shocking to hear. I'm not sure "natural causes" is something I'd ever associate with dying at 43. Dying that young is wholly unnatural and tragic.

This is so sad. I just saw it on Fox News. Jonah Goldberg had just done an interview, so he found out in studio, and they asked him to comment on live TV. He did a great job. Very professional. But it was hard for him to fight back those tears. It's hard for me not to cry, and I didn't even know him. I can't believe the loss those feel who counted him as a friend. We lost a warrior and good man. My prayers go out to his wife and children.
There's a poem that has always reminded me of Breitbart by Charles MacKay:

So weird, I was just listening to him on Hugh Hewitt last night. It is so strange to find out someone who sounded so passionate and full of energy just a few hours earlier die so suddenly.

Andrew could get me really pissed, with some releases I viewed as "made before being vetted." Those were conscious decisions on his part, and he certainly did more to inform America of dangers woven deep than almost anyone in the past couple of decades.

Horrible news.
My favorite moment is when he offered to pay $100K for evidence of the fake racial epithets that several black congressman said the Tea Party folks yelled at them. Verdict: no evidence.
The man had passion that turned into action. We have passion on the right, but for most us it's not of the Breitbartian kind.

Mr. Breitbart will be missed — by those who knew him, those who respected him, and those who loathed him. He did a service to us all.
I thought surely, surely no one would rejoice at any journalist's death. I was mistaken. MSNBC's comments were filled with remarks about karma, good riddance, and nobody dies of natural causes at 43. It's a sad place for those who think such. I don't want to live in their world.

Andrew was a fan and supporter of Ricochet from day one. He was incredibly encouraging during our early days, offering us office space, advice, and agreed to carry our podcast on his much bigger site without even hearing it. That's how he was.
For years, Andrew, Rob, and I have attended a monthly meet-up of about 100 media and political types here in Los Angeles that happens on the first Friday of every month. Tomorrow's gathering is going to be a very sad event.
