Ah, Cher, we thought we knew you. I never thought of her as a gypsy, tramp, or thief, but rather as a gifted artist. But something happens to some folks when they become successful, I guess. The wires cross, and they imagine all sorts of nefarious designs and intentions where none exist, while remaining cheerfully impervious to the truly dangerous mischief right under their reconstructed nose. On Twitter, Cher launched into a first class rant, to wit:
"Don't believe in the Right wing's effort to Subjugate women! WHO R THESE MEN WHO THINK THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE WOMEN BACK TO THE STONE" (end of 140 character limit)
(resumed) "AGE ! We talk about how radical Muslims take away the Rights of their woman, but HOW CAN WE LET These RW Misogynistic Cretins take away" (there goes the limit again)
(picking up where we left off) "Our BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS ! IF THIS Was Happening in another Country Woman Across The USA Would B outraged ! Well Girls wake up & Smell the" (stunted development due to character limit)
(continuing) "Coffee,you're in another Country! U young women don't realize what NO FREEDOM FEELS LIKE! WITHOUT FREEDOM YOU HAVE NOTHING !"
She goes on to explain that she's furious, hurt, and outraged, just in case we didn't quite catch on. Oh yes, and she tells us that North Koreans are evidently better off, or so she fancies.
Normally, this would be something to laugh at. Normally, the semi-coherent rantings of a celebrity would induce little more than a yawn. These are not normal times, however, and statements that religious institutions ought not (as a matter of conscience and Constitutional law) to be required to violate their own faith do not qualify as a war against women in any rational vocabulary.
If Cher is in the least bit curious what would take women back to the stone age, perhaps she could look to the FDA, which in 2010 disapproved the medication Avastin for treatment of advanced breast cancer. Maybe she could consult with the Obama Administration's task force that recommended that most women should begin receiving mammograms at age 50 instead of age 40, prompting cancer survivor Nancy Gual to observe, “I am shocked by these guidelines because if I had not had a mammogram at age 40, I would not be here today.” If I'm not mistaken, being stone cold dead because of treatments or tests withheld is about as "stone age" as it gets. The award winning star might consider whether Jane Sturm's mother felt particularly liberated or free when she heard President Obama suggest that maybe she should not have that life saving pace maker after all, and should instead settle for pain killers.
Instead of railing against people she calls, "RW Misogynistic Cretins," who are actually the good people fighting these ghastly initiatives that fly under the Orwellian banner of "health care," perhaps Cher could spend a little time looking at the real misogynists who would leave no woman under taxed, under managed, or under molested by Democrat politicians. Or perhaps she could survey the carnage of millions of little girls dismembered in the womb. Contrast the culture of life with the culture of death, Cher, and tell me which takes you closer to the stone age. If you insist that enlightenment demands a body count, that's your call. But stop insisting that you have a constitutional right to force someone else to pay for it.

I'm not a fan of tweeting, but I think we need a rule (supervised, of course, by an appropriate government agency) that once you get to 140 characters you're done. Tweets cannot be serialized.

Let's recap what we all "know" now.
We all know that Republicans are debating birth control. Democrats are not launching an assault against the First Amendment, whatever that is.
Everyone knows that Rush is a scoundrel. He only apologized under duress, so it doesn't count.
President Obama is apolitical, inserting himself into the Fluke affair to reach out to an unfairly attacked young woman. His Super Tuesday presser was an altruistic opportunity to discuss the need for civil discourse and proper decorum generally.
We know the president is unaware of unrepentant misogynist Bill Maher's disgusting comments about Sarah Palin, otherwise he would promptly denounce him and return his $1 million donation.

When it comes to men like Reid or Schumer or Axlerod, I don't have any trouble understanding their motivations.
They're venal men who've found a vehicle(politics) to take them towards wealth and power.
But the people who've always baffled me are those like Cher- the celebrities, academics, and journalists- who have nothing directly to gain from Democratic victories, and yet seem so invested in one.
Then it hit me.
They are face painters.
Those people who show up bare-chested for Bills' games in November, covered in blue and orange just to "show support for the team"
It's irrational, risking pneumonia in the belief that it will somehow influence the outcome of the game, but to do less would be a betrayal.
So why does Cher (or any other celebrity, journalist, blogger, etc.)have an irrational hatred for us i.e. conservatives?
Why do Red Sox fans hate the Yankees?
Or OU fans hate Texas?
Because it's fun to be so emotionally invested in a contest, to feel like one has an influence its outcome.
Problem is, politics isn't a game anymore.

I would caution Cher about ruling out a return to the Stone Age. Medically speaking, her face seems to be in the last phases of the Plastic Age at present and the Stone Age option may be the only way she can continue to avoid any apparent aging of her own over the next few decades.

billy, you're right about part of it. The other part is entirely rational in its own irrational context: people like Cher must be seen to be appropriately Progressive. No Conservative will refuse to hire her because of rabid Progressivism, but she knows plenty of Progressives would blacklist her or shun her socially for showing insufficient loyalty to the cause.

One of my Facebook friends helpfully explained to me that religious institutions should be forced to pay for birth control because "it's a lot cheaper than paying for pre-natal care." I tried to explain that 1. it's not about economics, 2. even if it were, it's not the role of government to force people to purchase anything, and 3. if it were only economic, and it were so much cheaper to cover birth control, then everyone would want to cover birth control, because it would be cheaper.

But it's probably not fair to question her motives, since her tweet indicates she's ignorant enough to sincerely believe the stupid things she professes to believe.

I don't know if the media coverage that reached me was typical but I remember that what I saw of Sony Bono's funeral was bizarre. They were burying a Congressman in the presence of his wife and two dependent children and the whole show was about Cher. No wonder these celebretards go insane, nothing around them is real and no one tells them to shut up and not make fools of themselves.

Like most celebrities Cher is irrelevant, but they have power because we give it to them by watching their movies or listening to their music. If enough people refused to fund their careers, they would learn to keep their mouths shut; unfortunately, many Conservatives are just as likely to head to the theatre as anyone else. If enough people boycotted these morons, they might not feel so bold.
