This is totally unimportant, except to Geeks like Me who find this outrageous.

So it's been confirmed, George Lucas is once again changing the original trilogy.  This time, he's making Darth Vader say "NOOOOOO!" when he throws the Emperor down the shaft.  Before, Vader was silent.

I've known enough artists to know a few that are never completely happy with their work, but they do know enough to put the brush down and call it done, so to speak.  George Lucas seems to have a need to constantly tinker and change even twenty years afterwards.  Honestly, don't mess with success.  The movies were great as they were.  Let them stay that way.

Hate to break the news, but the original trilogy was completed more than 20 years ago.  I remember taking my wife to see Return Of The Jedi when we were first dating.  That would peg it around 1983 - meaning almost 30 years ago.  Yikes!  I'm gettin old...

I wouldn't mind if Lucas re-shot all the dialogue scene of the first three (as in the most recent three) with real actors.  And real dialogue.

Other than that, why would Darth Vader yell "Noooo!" after throwing the Emperor down the shaft?  Wouldn't it make more sense for the Emperor to yell "NOOoooo!"?  Is there something I've missed in the plot line which makes Vader's new response coherent?

I sort of liked that Vader was silent.  If anything, I'd have liked to see him dust his hands off as he walked away.

Only twenty-eight years ago, and since twenty-eight has the word "twenty" in it, I'm stickin' with what I said.

I saw the original Star Wars ages ago -- long enough that it is one of the first three films I remember seeing, the other two being "Bambi" and "Charlotte's Web."  Star Wars had the advantage of not making me cry.  I've loved the originals ever since, and I watch with a morbid fascination at times at how Lucas seems far more unhappy with his creation than those of us who grew up with it.

It never ceases to amaze me how Lucas never fails to alienate fans of his work (note I said "fans of his work" NOT "his fans").  I just about threw up when I found out that all copies of Return of the Jedi would have Hayden Christensen's ugly mug at the end.

In the long run, I guess Lucas already spent 3 movies ruining the coolest villain ever, so this won't really push the lame-o meter too much farther.

All I know is that I already own multiple copies of both trilogies on VHS and DVD: the original as released, the re-releases, etc.  I just can't pull the trigger on yet another release with more changes, even if it is Blu-ray.

Now, I might reconsider if he did something about those Ewoks ...

Ah some good old fashioned Star Wars rage, you take me back in time Mr. Douglas. I see in my mind's eye a posting on Slashdot announcing Lucas' initial intent to "update and improve" his trilogy, looking back I have to smile as I do now at this latest outrage. How indignant we all were, with the barrels of digital ink spilled over the years by distraught fans you would imagine nations were at stake.

Well a bit older and perhaps even wiser I can be more philosophical, also of course I have my untainted DVD's. He cannot harm me, I am beyond the reach of his digital hackwork.

Why don't they just do the Batman-style total remake? New cast, new twists and turns. James Earl Jones was the perfect voice for Vader, but let Jack Nicholson do it this time. "Your lack of faith ... disturbs me ..."

I'm still waiting for the reworked Obi-Wan/Dart Vader fight scene with Obi-Wan's original line, "Only a master of evil, Darth," awkwardly re-dubbed to say, "Only a master of evil, Anakin." That's a major inconsistency that has never been addressed.

Yes, let's recreate the most laugh-out-loud ridiculous moment of the prequels and stitch it into a major scene in Return of the Jedi.  Great job, Lucas.

Imagine you are a special effects guy. You work really hard at your craft and finally land a job at the Skywalker Ranch. Working for the man whose work inspired you your whole life. All of your dreams have come true. Then he asks you to make Jar Jar Binks...

Imagine being that guy. Imagine how the guy who added these stupid sounds must feel. They are, every day, working to turn their dream into a nightmare and earn the hatred of hundreds of millions, if not billions, of their compatriots.

Kind of like working in Washington.

Lucas would rather "integrate" his movies together at whatever price to quality for the sake making sure that no one can separate the original movies from the prequels.  It is reminiscent of The Simpsons episode where comic book legend Stan Lee takes a Thing doll (a Marvel comics character) and crams it into a Batmobile (for a DC Comics character).  When the boy complains that he broke it, Stan Lee says, "Broke or made better?"  I suspect George Lucas can't tell the difference between broke or made better either.

Next he will restore the lost Jar Jar Binks scenes from American Graffiti.

Lucas is doing it for the money. This is the guy who secured merchandising rights to the original Star Wars before it was even filmed.

I can tolerate the bad acting. It's his juvenile philosophies which drive me up the wall. He doesn't even couch them in good dialog:

"From my perspective, the Jedi are evil."

Could be worse. Vader could have said "Do Not Want."

Actually, that would be better. Also, Han shot first.

God bless you, Lileks, you're on our side!  If you really want to get honked off about the butchering of the films and the lies Lucas has told about various revisions, you should check out sites like this.  Lucas is basically making the older films conform to the look of the newer ones because he made a poor choice in how he filmed the new ones.  He could also produce a Blu-Ray quality version of the original, unedited trilogy whenever he chooses, but he continues to spout the half-truth that the original edit no longer exists.  I've given up any hope of seeing the originals in a quality format again until after Lucas dies.

This is what I am stuck on as well.  It makes no sense in the first place.  Has Lucas explained his reasoning on this anywhere?

It is a powerful moment -- where Vader decides he has had enough -- and it is made all the more powerful by his silence.
