An Odd Story
Let me divert your attention from the global economic train wreck for a moment with an odd story. Back in grade school there was a weird kid who everyone bullied. I've always looked back on that with guilt, because although I wasn't the worst bully, I certainly wasn't nice to him. I called him weird and creepy and I didn't want to sit next to him.
I've remembered him a few times as an adult and thought, "How miserable children are to each other. How painful his childhood must have been. He was in fact very bright and sensitive." I haven't thought about him much, but that's how I framed the story in my mind.
Some indirect connection on Facebook brought his name to my attention this morning. Him? I thought. The name took me back to fifth grade, stirring cobwebs of bathetic nostalgia. I clicked on his page out of curiosity, hoping everything had turned out okay for him.
Well, he grew up to be a Satanist pornographer.

It's obviously all your fault; we all know that happy, well-adjusted kids never grow up to be Satanic pornographers or terrorists or serial killers or anything.

Although I am not a religious person -- I just happen to think there's a moral natural law as understood by Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington -- "satanist pornographer" is essentially a redundancy in my book.

Oh, no, trust me. Both words are necessary to convey what is apparently his life's work.
I did not stay on the page long enough to find out whether it was funded by the NEA.

Egad. I just...really can't wrap my mind around what "Satanist pornographer" even means, for which I want to thank my parents for the sheltered upbringing they apparently provided me. Yeesh.

Childhood has a cruelty to it, sometimes captured by the horror stories of Stephen King. We have all joined in bullying and dished it out on a scapegoat; and probably copped some as well. I regret the hurt I have caused to the guy in my class in primary school who wore thick glasses and was even less co-ordinated at sports than me. Hope he met someone who made him happy, and forgot that part of his past.
