William Yoder

While discussing the Weiner scandal a few episodes of the podcast ago, Peter wondered how widespread the phenomenon of sexting has become.  Judging by the story coming out of Milford, Indiana today, the lewd activity has become so ubiquitous that even the technology-shunning Amish now participate.

An Amish man from Milford, Ind., who pulled into a police sting operation in a horse and buggy has been charged with soliciting a 12-year-old girl via sexting.

Willard Yoder, 21, allegedly sent more than 600 text, picture and video messages to the local girl that he didn't know, including solicitations for sex and naked images of himself.

...Alarmed by the disturbing messages, the girl told her mother, who later informed the police.

The Connersville Police Department set up a sting operation at a local restaurant in Milford Wednesday, with an undercover cop posing as the girl. According to police reports, Yoder sent five messages intended for the victim asking, "Are you ready for tonight?

I sure do love it when real life beats The Onion out of a story.

Clearly, the most apt dismissive is [redacted] you and the horse you rode in on.

From ABC News: "Once police confirmed via exchanged text messages that Yoder was the alleged perpetrator, they arrested him, securing his cellphone and his horse and buggy."

There must be something about that town that brings out the worst in people.  I live not very far from there, and as long as I can remember it has had a reputation as a place where a lot of bad things go on:  theft, prostitution, drug activity.  Some people call it Connertucky, which may not be fair to Kentucky, but the idea of Connersville as a lawless hillbilly town has some truth to it.  But there was a gun store down there that I always liked.

Anyway it's probably gotten worse there since the Visteon plant closed and put a lot of the town out of work.  A new company called Carbon Motors is moving into that building and is supposed to start making a new police car there in 2012, with federal funds to compete with Ford.

A lot of Amish have youthful rebellious larks.  Sadly, not that really cute Mennonite girl I sat next to on the plane on the way to the Saratoga race meeting.

But 600 messages?  Take a hint, man.

This simply shows that, along with all the other guys, God gave the Amish men two brains but only enough blood between them to operate one at a time.

Hmm... do we know whether this guy was in Rumschpringe?

I thought this related article on how the Amish community handles crime was interesting. Not being Amish myself, I can't vouch for its accuracy. But despite its abuses, I wonder if there's something to be said for this model -- though I doubt it could work outside a tightly-knit community.

Not exactly the same as what Weiner did.  Weiner was a lot of things but a pedophile he was not (as far as we know). Glad they caught this guy early.

A Weiner trap? Is that anything like Chinese handcuffs?

John Grant, Guest Contributor

I sometimes wonder what a comic genius like Aristophanes would do if he were plunked down in America today.  When life imitates the Onion so often, what becomes of comedy?

The Amish use windmill powered cell phones.

Or it might be something special that little girls are born with. In which case it sounds like they prevented this guy from falling in. This time, at least.

The part about them catching him by listening for the distinctive sound of his buggy cracked me up.

Really. This isn't even close to the same category as Weiner's sexting. Both are gross, but this is a whole other level.
