America in Color, 1939-1943

This is a beautiful collection of images of mostly rural and small-town America, notable for their lovely composition as well as for their vivid color. The pictures were taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information and are now the property of the Library of Congress. The image to the right is the tank crew of an M-4 in Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1942. (Hat tip: Damian Counsell.)

These are amazing. Is #66 the inspiration for Rosie the Riveter?
I think it's very telling to see those shots after reading the article Claire writes about above, on the decline of the American dream.

Judith, Those are exquisite. I like the ones of the schoolchildren singing; you can see that some of the kids have no shoes.

Fascinating photos. I'm intrigued by the photos of Pie Town because it's a ghost town today. I might make a day trip to check out the ruins. Maybe sometime this winter after the rattlesnakes have gone into hibernation.
