I heard something on CNN this morning. The guest asked a question, “ if China’s only view of America were based on the TV shows they watched, what would be their impression of America with all the crap reality shows available (i.e. the Housewives of XXX) .  I would like to change that query to “If you could chose just 2 or 3 shows (currently on air), you wanted the Chinese people to use in getting a picture of America, What would they be?”

My choices and the message it sends:

“American Idol” - We are gifted with song and music is important

“Top Shot” - We are gifted with the 2nd Amendment and we’re not afraid

“Dirty Jobs” – We are gifted with passion and free enterprise

I just notice this string has moved to the Main Feed from the Member Feed.   It may be nothing, But I think that's very cool.

Me Likey..  I'm sure I'll move to the bigger and badder ones, once the kids are out of the house.

CuriousJohn: I haven't tried Sons of Guns yet.  Its on my list to start putting on the DVR.   My Favorite show "Top Shot"  makes me want to go shopping at my nearby Gander Mountain Outfitter.  And I'm not a NRAer or a owner of a gun, unless you count a red rider bb rifle a weapon.

wilber forge: Mythbusters is kick to say the least.  Sons of Guns is another, albeit hard to get into. · 16 minutes ago

Outside of the vicseral driving need to purchase a Boom Stick, as I am fond of calling them, take a few moment or two. As this may sound cheesey, the air rifles and pistols of today are quite suprising and will not break the bank, great fun as well.

A recent few days of practice with the PCP air guns put big smiles on the faces of some shooting buddies. And they were Texans, Go figure. · 3 minutes ago

Andrea Ryan: And CuriousJohn, you MUST watch The Voice. It blows away American Idol. I think it does, anyway. :-) · 2 hours ago

Definitely more "real" than American idol which has a lot more to do with looks and lack of talent (give or take a few rare gems) as opposed to The Voice which is more about talent rather than looks. Adam Levine is also nice to look at...

Dirty Jobs puts the lie to the slogan "there are some jobs Americans just won't do."

Mythbusters shows that Americans (at least some of us) have a healthy skepticism that leads us to question the official or the generally-accepted version.

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives shows the amazing scope of American diversity: we come from everywhere, we draw inspiration from everywhere, we are willing to try things from everywhere.  And it also celebrates American ingenuity and creativity...

Love Dirty Jobs. It keeps me in a good mood when I'm doing indoor exercise. My husband thinks I'm crazy for liking the show, but I think he's crazy for not getting it.

Mythbusters is also a favorite.

Cooking shows are my favorite form of purely mindless entertainment, though. The  unusual combinations of ingredients contestants use (or are forced to use) in cooking competitions inspire me to try new things in the kitchen. For example, the show CHOPPED interests me because the random ingredients that the chefs find in their baskets remind me of the random ingredients that face me in the fridge when we haven't gone grocery shopping lately.

Don't forget that you can combine these two messages by singing along with Mike Rowe:

Dirty Jobs song in honor of 100th dirty job

Dirty Jobs song in honor of dirty jobs in all 50 states

If Mike Rowe isn't an American idol, I don't know who is ;-)

Several people have brought up Mythbusters and the ethos of skepticism.  I would just like to remind everyone that while Mythbusters is an awesome show and a ton of vicarious fun, you shouldn't set aside your healthy skepticism while watching it.  The experiments they run aren't always, how shall I say ... rigorous.

Combat Hospital aired on ABC, I watched it on Hulu. It about a Combat Hospital in Afghanistan. Season One ended a couple month ago, not sure when or if the next one starts.

Now that's Fan of Mike.

I often wonder how much can these people make (in reference to Dirty Jobs)  But I'm sure there are people out there where money isn't the issue.  Thank GOD for the Dirty Jobs people.

This String is going so Strong, I'm going to do a version for shows no longer new , but are still current.  I will have to start making a list of them.  I haven't watched Dexter yet.

Is "Sons of Anarchy a reality show ?

That show about amateur chemistry is good, although some of the students are mean. "Breaking Bad" .

Would you like to give an example of their non rigorous.. I feel I need to step up to support my Mythbusters, since they're not here to defend themselves.

CuriousJohn: Are you a fan of the Podcast?  That's how I got hooked.  Once a week wasn't enough.  I rejoined once i found out they started building a podcast network.

Back to TV  .....   How about yhe US Coast Guard show?  I must be watching something else when Swamp People are on.  I laugh at the promo spots, but haven't stumbled across it.  I'm afraid to watch the Redneck Billionaire.  I'm sure that would go over great in China · 10 hours ago

I'm not sure I should admit this, but I have listened to every single podcast since Ricochet started, including Law Talk and Radio Free Delingpole (not hard, since there are only a few of them).  I'm, also, addicted to Uncommon Knowledge and Econ Talk.  And addicted is an understatement.

Coast Guard Alaska...I watch that, too.

I used to watch Ice Road Truckers a lot.  And Deadliest Catch.  Those people are incredibly brave.

I'm with you on the podcast overload. Here's a couple that I recommend for an open-mindedness.

  • Dan Carlin's hardcore history
  • Dan Carlin's common sense
  • Best of Left Podcast

by listening to the Best of the Left, I find the libs are crazier then I believed they were.  It makes me go running back to Ricochet for a dose of sanity.

Dan Carlin provides a nice in-depth discussion of subjects that's worth listening to.
