What dark conspiracy could account for reports that John Edwards may be indicted for violating campaign finance law while attempting to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter?

Edwards, 57, a former golden boy of the Democratic Party, has been the subject of a two-year investigation into whether his political donors gave more than $1 million to Hunter, his campaign videographer, to hide the affair as he pursued a bid for the Oval Office.

The cash was allegedly paid by two key Edwards donors, Rachel "Bunny" Mellon and the politician's finance chairman, Fred Baron, who died in 2008.

Baron admitted to funneling the cash shortly before his death, but insisted Edwards had no idea of the back-door deal to hide Hunter from the press.

Oh, wait, no, we don't think like that. Note to Turkish readers: Americans, generally, being totally unsubtle and naive, will pretty much to the last read this and say, Man, John Edwards is a jerk. That explanation will completely satisfy them. Satisfies me, anyway.

Claire Berlinski, Ed.: What dark conspiracy could account for reports…

That vast right-wing one we heard so much about several years ago should suffice, shouldn't it?

Paul A. Rahe

The chief conspirator was John Edwards; the main co-conspirator was Rielle Hunter. They wanted to believe that the rules did not apply to them. Dominique Strauss-Kahn was involved in a similar conspiracy, and his wife was his chief enabler. The same could be said about that fellow Clinton and his wife.

Why would anyone get on the high wire if there were no chance of falling off?

Claire, you seem to have forgotten the videotape that allegedly exists.  Would that we all could.

John Edwards?  He's still around?   Huh...I thought I'd heard he died of auto-erotic asphyxiation a couple of years ago...

His hair should be a significant mitigating factor.

Indeed, although most of us had figured this out well before news of his affair became public.

I'm strangely comforted by the fact that Mr. Edwards was soundly trounced in the electoral arena, ruthlessly ridiculed, and has disappeared from public view. It partially restores my faith in the basic good sense of the American public. Dennis Miller advocates a revival of public shunning and, if I remember correctly, had Edwards on his Shun List for quite a while. Let's all just keep shunning him, shall we? And if you happen to see him at the store or hair salon, be sure to dramatically turn your back on him immediately.

And that's the real story — that America's media sat on a profitable story to protect the candidate of their choice.

Watchdogs, my foot.
