Ambassador Bolton for President?

This one took me by surprise:
To date, in my view, no Republican candidate has persuasively argued that our economic recovery and long-term prosperity are completely intertwined with a strong national security posture. If no one else is prepared to make that case, I will.

Mr Bolton has hinted for some time that he would like to run for President. He would make a great President, but I see little chance of him being nominated.
He'd also make a great Secretary of State - we can only hope.

I fear I'm not on board with Bolton's foreign policy, but I do love his facial hair. And, in fact, I want our next president to have the 'stache.

I don't know all his policy positions, but here's what I do know and love:
He's principled, he's fearless, and he's articulate.
I couldn't say the same of any of the present contenders.

What's wrong with his foreign policy?
Facial hair seems unlikely if Mrs Bachmann or Mrs Palin win. And it wouldn't suit Mr Perry. Neither would it Mr Ryan or Mr Rubio - we should be so lucky!

There have been hints about a Bolton run for the Presidency for a while, including a piece in National Review (with a brilliant Roman Genn cover) a few months back. I'd prefer him as Sec State, but fear that we don't have a principled enough candidate out there who would appoint him. Perhaps we should make that a foreign policy "litmus test" for the candidates?

I don't think he can be elected president, but perhaps Secretary of State for whatever Republican gets there in 2013?
Just think of the reaction worldwide as we go back to realpolitik...

His mustache alone makes him a contender. I would vote for this man based on facial hair alone. You do not mess with a President who's mustache implies that he eats 3rd world tyrants and dictators for breakfast.

I’ve heard John Bolton in a small room, in person, and he’s impressive, knowledgeable, experienced and fearless.
As for the nomination process….we don’t influence it much if any, but remember the great lesson from baseball, the True American Sport, ”it ain’t over till it’s over.”
I like this guy. A lot.

I agree with others - ultimately Bolton should be an important part of a new administration, and his argument has validity, but I don't see him as President.
At the same time, I am hesitant to support "Defense Spending" as a kneejerk form of patriotism. This country is AWFUL at doing anything in terms of weapons development that is cost effective. And nobody has advocated a vision for reforming it that makes any sense. It must be reformed - probably by pursuing entirely alternative pathways that isolate the traditional bureaucracies and freeze them out.
Bolton is not a voice to help us do that.

Bolton is smart, inspiring and tough. I would vote for him unless competition heats up and Ryan or Rubio enters.

My fear about Bolton is that he was so completely demonized just for his UN ambassador nomination that he will be tainted for the great masses who vote without ever having studied the candidates. Those who get their news from John Stewart will be hard to convince of reality.
