In the words of my photojournalist friend Iason, who was arrested and detained last year in Iran, "At a time when talk of a military strike against Iran looms ever larger, it's often easy to lose sight of the fact that Iran is one of the most visually stunning countries in the world."

His photos really prove this point.

The "group of Kurdish villagers crowd onto a slope to watch a dervish procession in the mountaintop village of Horaman-e Takht" is particularly well-composed. Lovely.

Iran is also one of the most interesting, culturally sophisticated, long-historied countries in the world. It's a lot like Nazi Germany in this respect (as more than a couple others), in that it's basically been hijacked by a bunch of utopian dictators who happened to come out on top in a crisis point…
