Alvin Greene just lost to Senator Jim DeMint in South Carolina the other day. Watch Greene's concession speech and tell me if you agree: if only he'd run in California, Senator Greene would be on his way to Washington in January.

We owe this man a vote of thanks. For two years, we've been asking ourselves, "What is the absolute bottom number for voter idiocy?"

28%.

I find this fascinating. Why did this man win the primary? At some level was his elevation not also a repudiation of the machine status quo? I think there has to be a book here. I wish Vanity Fair were not so ideological because the story of Alvin Green would be a fascinating read.

I like SC, I like Jim Demint, and I love my country, but I was pulling for Alvin.

His victory would have been the best pitch for limited government I can imagine.

He should move to the state of Washington and run again. The voters there have proven time and again they approve of being represented by an imbecile, and Patty Murray would surely appreciate no longer being the stupidest member of the Senate.

Bill Walsh

I'm pretty sure that his big mistake was not getting that line of action figures out there.

I cannot wrap my head around how this guy didn't get laughed out of the room during the nominating process. That was like a cable access parody of a politician. I felt bad for him by the end of that because he clearly has something wrong mentally.

I'd take Alvin Greene over Al Franken any day -- or for that matter, over Barbara Boxer.

(OK, you'd have to take away the obscenity charges.)

That candidate is "too damn high."

Did I see a Christmas tree? It's three weeks before Thanksgiving.

Greene needs a head doctor. Early onset Alzheimers? Certainly some form of dementia. Or perhaps he really is a moron.

Lawrence O'Donnell of MSNBC endorsed Greene over DeMint.

O'Donnell had Greene on his show The Last Word a few weeks ago and seemed to delight in the incoherence of the man, who just kept repeating, "Jim DeMint started the recession..."; but O'Donnell still said Greene should be elected.

Greene, clearly. Nonchalance yet disciplined-precision in that circling manuever. A natural.

He does have a point. We really do deserve an explanation from Jim DeMint on why he decided to start the recession.

Trace Urdan: Why did this man win the primary?

A few simple reasons. First, the SC Democrats knew they had no chance against Jim DeMint and put next to zero effort into their preferred primary candidate, Vic Rawl - few if any yard signs, bumper stickers, public appearances, etc. No one really knew anything about either primary candidate, which leads into the second reason Greene won: His name appeared first on the ballot. It's really no more complicated than that.

Actually, it would be pretty depressing. Greene has delivered plenty of laugh lines, but he has devolved into a really pathetic figure. I am convinced he's not a well man, and throwing his hat in the ring for the Senate race is just one manifestation of his problems (whatever they are). If he has people looking out for him, they need to get him some help. No kidding around about that.

Thank you Matthew for that. I guess I had thought there was a possibility that race played a factor here. But why don't the Dems try in earnest to front a (better) Black candidate. I would think that would represent the most viable route to any sort of Democratic victory in South Carolina -- or is the fundamental conservatism of the state just too deep for even that strategy to be viable? Are African American voters in South Carolina not reliably Democrat?

You would think they would do that, but the SC Democrats have been wholly unimaginative and have not developed many compelling candidates of any stripe. We saw this year that the SC GOP has done a much better job recruiting racially diverse, attractive candidates (i.e., Nikki Haley and Tim Scott). Also, the most powerful Black Dem politicians in the state (and the white ones, for that matter) tend to be old school machine-style pols who don't draw much support outside their districts. Think Jim Clyburn and the recently deposed John Spratt - heavyweights in their district and in the committee room, but zero chance on a statewide or national stage. I know of no one that the Dems have on the bench behind these guys.

Greene may have had the wrong issue. Maybe it's not the endless recession that is animating South Carolinian angst. Yes, I am suggesting that perhaps, just perhaps, "the rent is too damn high."

Oh there you are, Ottoman! I was just thinking that I hadn't seen you around here for a while and was wondering where you'd run off to. Guess I need to start seriously trolling around your profile...
