Socialist protesters getting their heads kicked in. Is there a downside here I'm missing?

You've got to be kidding me.

What are the specific demands of the protesters? The article doesn't mention any from what I can see.
Re: Albania: The Whole World is Emphatically Not Watching
They have some objection to being killed when they protest. Odd.

Re: Albania: The Whole World is Emphatically Not Watching
They may not enjoy being killed while they protest, but if they're already protesting then there must be some antecedent political problem.

I'm old enough to remember the day when, in college classrooms all over North America, Albania was held to be the perfect Communist role model nation. In 2009, they tried to get into NATO. Now, this.

I don't understand why Smart Diplomacy (TM) hasn't kicked in. I distinctly remember is was said to be a hundredfold improvement over GWB's cowboy approach. And the left's silence on these developments is also odd. It never learns from history, so remorse over the shooting-from-the-hip business in Tucson is not likely. And they buried the politics-stops-at-the-water's-edge tradition many years ago.

Am I correct in understanding that Albanians are ethnically related to the Kosovars? Or is the link only a matter of religion? Both are Muslim, no? Let us hope the disorder doesn't spill over the borders into the former Yugoslavia. I hate to say this, but European Muslims might be encouraged to get into the act as a show of support for . . . what? I don't know. But this could get much worse. Paris? London? Rotterdam? Ewww.

The majority of the people currently in Kosovo are ethnically Albanian. This has long been the case, but over the last thirty years the percentage of Albanians in Kosovo has increased from ~81% to ~92%.

The news is on both NPR and Drudge, which means it's not being swept under the rug. But most Americans never had interest in Albania and won't suddenly care now.
Agreed. The more nations who jump on the revolution bandwagon, the more likely this will spread beyond the region. That doesn't mean I expect any successful revolutions in Europe, but civil unrest is certainly a possibility. Perhaps we'll see a repeat of the Paris vandalism frenzy.

Not even a little bit, Claire. A very good friend of mine swam five miles in freezing waters to escape socialist rule in Albania. Until I find out more about the circumstances of the deaths, these are hardcore gulag master wannabes or useful idiots provoking armed men at the barricades. That is a war zone.
My friend is Greek Orthodox, so any Muslim angle here is just icing on the cake. Three? Three deaths? Standing under the banner Socialist in Albania? And you want outraged support for them?
