From ABC News:

Osama bin Laden's terror network admitted today that U.S. forces had tracked and killed their leader, but vowed to keep on attacking America.

The statement by al Qaeda was released on the Internet and should end any doubts that the terror mastermind is dead, despite President Obama's refusal to release gruesome photos showing bin Laden's body with a bullet hole in his head.

Al Qaeda said bin Laden's blood "will not be wasted" and it will continue attacking America and its allies.

You probably didn't need this Al Qaeda press release to know that the war on terror would continue, but some folks in Washington, D.C. could use the information.

The statement was prepared and approved on Tuesday and we're also told that Osama bin Laden prepared an audio statement a week prior to his death and that this will come out soon, too.

For what it's worth The Daily reports that Osama had been working on a 9/11 anniversary plot against American trains and the rail system. But don't tell that to the folks who think that all the world's evil and conflict died with bin Laden.

I was just about to post this this item. If the women of Ricochet had coordinated our news-scanning slightly better today, we'd all have had clean laundry.

Hmmm ... al-Qaeda doesn't want the photos released, obviously.

Nutjob conspiracy theory warning! Of course at-Qaeda confirms the death. If we didn't actually get bin Laden, he (and they) would benefit by us believing that we did. The "faked death" gets used at least once a week on primetime.

Show the photos. How many American lives were lost in Afghanistan to purchase them?

Well no wonder we had to take him out.  As the Prez sez, Nobody Messes With Joe.

I'd just like to thank you for giving me another reason why my laundry is not done.

So much for Obama's quip that people will take high speed rail to avoid TSA pat-downs...

OK, I'm now convinced that not showing the photos was the right thing to do (reversing my prior belief). Hardcore conspiracists will never be convinced, but the fringe should be if both the U.S. and al-Qaeda agree he was killed. That should keep the conspiracies to a minimum.

The photos can always be shown in the future if there's a reason to.

The one real downside of not showing them now is that they become prime leak-bait. And if they're leaked, it's a black eye on the intelligence services. But gosh, hopefully they're competent enough to protect a few JPEGs.

Claire, I was hoping to hear from you on this (you can fold those clothes later, right?): what's the current mood in Turkey vis-a-vis the conspiracies? Is Osama dead there, too?
