This would be a violation of the Camp David accords, if so.
Unconfirmed Update: They're shutting down Al Jazeera. (I wondered why they hadn't so far.)

And Obama will, no doubt, figure out some way to blame Israel. My God, this situation just gets worse by the minute. At least Netanyahu is in charge rather than one of the Labor or Kadima equivocators.

I think the Camp David Accords allow for one division of troops up to 50 miles east of the Suez canal.

Didn't see it covered on the Al-Jazeera English feed, sat through two cycles of Egyptian coverage.
Re: Al Jazeera, Now: Egyptian Military Entering Sinai
Claire, I'm not seeing reports of this troop movement anywhere, including al-Arabiya.
And yes, al-Jazeera does appear to be off the air in Egypt.

Re: Al Jazeera, Now: Egyptian Military Entering Sinai
I've found this source to be pretty responsible about what they report: Egyptian authorities have closed the crossing with the Gaza Strip indefinitely as its army deploys in the northern Sinai, a Ma'an correspondent said Sunday.
In the current circumstances, I wouldn't be surprised if the Israelis are willing to temporarily overlook the Camp David accords. A treaty is only meaningful for so long as both parties continue to exist.

If true, this is bad news indeed. Where are the blue hats? Not that I would expect more than the most tepid response from the UN.
Given that the current state of affairs is entirely spontaneous, I don't expect the Egyptian army has any sort of plan. I suppose we'll know if Israel mobilizes. God be with you Judith.

Re: Al Jazeera, Now: Egyptian Military Entering Sinai
It just occurred to me that any move by Egypt into Sinai might be an attempt to seal the border with Gaza. If memory serves, the people of Gaza not long ago attempted a spontaneous border incursion into Egyptian sovereign territory. Seems to me they did only to find conditions on the Egyptian side even worse than Gaza!!!

Re: Al Jazeera, Now: Egyptian Military Entering Sinai
From my earlier post:
Watch the dynamic once the military gets active. The Egyptian military is strongly anti Muslim Brotherhood, but no doubt the MB have been actively seeking to infiltrate it. Have they been successful enough to influence the nascent Islamism reflected in the polls nationally? If the military finds it's own guns turned on itself, then the future of the Suez will be a great worry.
