Ahmadinejad is Laughing Himself Senseless
Don't ever underestimate the Persian sense of humor.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday strongly condemned what he called the "savage" crackdown by British police on rampaging youths, the state television's website reported.
"This savage treatment of people is absolutely unacceptable, and British statesmen must hear the voice of the people and grant them freedoms," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying. "British politicians should look to help their own people instead of invading Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya to plunder their oil."
Ahmadinejad said part of the British public has "lost its patience and become frustrated," and urged London to "get on the people's side and change their management, instead of using such approaches."
He criticized the U.N. Security Council for remaining "silent" over the developments in Britain, which is experiencing its worst unrest in decades.
Meanwhile, David Cameron has announced that "We will do whatever is necessary to restore law and order on our streets. Every contingency is being looked at. Nothing is off the table."
They may even use water cannon. For the first time in mainland British history.

At least they're not resorting to the Comfy Chair.

The U.S. and Britain should retaliate by declaring a moratorium on all Members Only jacket exports to Iran.

Admonishing his enemies for doing exactly what he has done but they will not do? Strange. I swear I've witnessed that strategy somewhere before.
Perhaps Middle Eastern dictators and the Western Left are not so ideologically different, afterall.

I read an article yesterday in which a bobby explained that water cannons are generally used to push back thick and stationary crowds; they are less effective against loosely gathered rioters who have no loyalty to each other. It sounded like a reasonable explanation to me.
The rubber bullets should be let fly, though.
Here's question that I haven't seen asked yet. When riots like this occur in any country, is it ultimately the responsibility of the national authorities or local authorities to break them up?
I'm inclined to say it's up to local authorities, though they may request federal assistance. Only when the rioting spread beyond London did it become foremost the national government's responsibility.
If a national government could take charge whenever local matters have national consequences, big cities like Houston and New York would be powerless.

Aaaron - the police system in the UK is quite different from the US - there is really only one police authority - the Home Office, i.e. central government - although some police funding comes from local authorities, if I recall.
So, in the case of London, both the Prime Minister and Mayor had to return from vacation to oversee the brutal government repression.
There should be no need for water cannons - the British weather is sufficient.

Maybe Ahmadinejad should provide material support to the British regime to help quell civil unrest as I understand he has to his friends in Syria?

The Brits had no problem using water cannons on those unruly Irish folks in the past.
The British police force just might resort to squirt guns, Oh, The horrors....

Thanks for the clarification.

London had clear blue skies all four days I was there, years ago. Unusual weather seems to follow me when I travel.

Unfortunately, that water falls downward. You need water going sideways.
