Adventures in Podcasting

I had a great time co-hosting the Ricochet Podcast with Peter Robinson. Absent Rob Long and James Lileks, it wasn’t quite as raucous as usual, but thanks to guests Claire Berlinski and Steve Manacek, I thought we had an entertaining and occasionally informative program. Rob and James are on a National Review cruise, and apparently the phone lines were less important to them than the buffet lines, but they should return next week.
In any event, I appreciate the opportunity to participate, and I look forward to hearing Rob and Peter and James next time. Meantime, I’ll return to my broadcast specialty: selling vowels.

Pat Sajak and Peter Robinson: Tireless champions for the wretched Ricochet fans who cannot afford to go on Caribbean cruises in the middle of November. I salute you, sirs!
Right now, I'm bitterly picturing Rob Long and James Lileks on the deck of the ship, sipping mai tais and sounding like Mr. Potter from It's A Wonderful Life and James William Bottomtooth from Family Guy.

Pat, greetings from the high seas. Thanks for taking the Big Chair.

Lileks rocking the sleeveless canary T. Rob looks scared.
Pat, why do people buy vowels? Do they have to?

I can't wait until EJHill gets his mitts on that photo...

[Double-post Deleted. I think Ricochet needs a delete button for this sort of mishap.]

Re: Adventures in Podcasting
You know that feeling where you catch someone you had admired or respected in a less than flattering situation, and your image of them is irreparably dashed? I think from now on I'll call that a "yellow sleeveless shirt moment".

Pat,
I was quite impressed with your hosting skills and just as Mark Steyn had a previous life as a DJ (which is why he is such a natural fit on Rush's radio show) you have an intuitive sense of how to pace a question and answer session that is refreshing. Its all the more evident when you're in almost a solo setting and paired with someone as gracious as Peter. Do a couple of more sessions like that and Dante will release you from Purgatorio for unleashing Keith Olbermann on a world that didn't deserve it.

I hoard vowels like incandescent bulbs. Gonna sell em on the black market.
Say, Pat, re the early part of the big show, has Hollywood always been liberal? Before your time being there, probably, but I remember (from youtube) all those Rat Pack celebrity roasts featuring Goldwater as a frequent panelist, and even Reagan once. Nary a lib politician there. Since the Rat Pack were essentially the cool kids, I wonder if it's necessary for Hollywood to always be liberal, or whether it swings.
Capra also comes to mind. Hmm, maybe we need more Italians.

Rob is afraid that Lileks is moving in on him to do a TSA junk toss.

Re: Adventures in Podcasting
Are Rob and James waiting for their "heliocopter" ride? That might account for the latter's look of slight consternation.

Re: Adventures in Podcasting
So, does this break Rob's streak? Until now, if memory serves, Rob was the only person to appear on every podcast.
Re: Adventures in Podcasting
We weren't keeping track of this, but I believe you are correct.

Re: Adventures in Podcasting
When I realized Rob and James weren't going to be on the podcast, I was worried that this episode might be a little dull. No disrespect to Peter, who is the high exemplar of nature's own gentlemen, but those other guys are, you know, kinda fun. Thus, I hit "play" on my iPod with that feeling you get when your favorite radio talk show host goes on vacation and is replaced by someone stolid and ideologically reliable but deeply unsatisfying. (Often this person is a scintillating guest during a 10- or 20-minute segment, but quickly wears out his welcome as he staggers past that mark bearing the show on his narrow shoulders.)
As I listened, my resignation was quickly replaced with delight. This episode was as engaging and entertaining as any other Ricochet podcast, if not more so. And then it hit me: Pat Sajak is a television broadcast host. This guy has been entertaining people for years, and he's a master of the medium. Sorry I missed that little detail, Pat. And Rob, don't worry -- the podcast is in capable hands. Have a few more cocktails and heliocopter rides, and enjoy your time away.

Re: Adventures in Podcasting
I absolutely love them Podcasts.
Did Lileks drink more than He could afford, therefore having to earn money as a Lifeguard?

The passengers decided to put on a show of their own--a tribute to tropical fruit. James snagged the coveted role of the Banana.

A bit of baby oil and spray tan, and Lileks looks ready to throw down with Hulk Hogan!

Re: Adventures in Podcasting
Nice muscle shirt, James. But wouldn't one with sleeves and a Hummel logo have been more appropriate?
