Abby Sunderland's Dangerous Priorities
Are the parents wrong for allowing their kids to pursue goals like being the youngest solo around-the-world sailor? She's obviously very capable but I'm more disturbed by the priorities the family endorses. Let her be great, let her challenger herself, but why does she have to be first? Why does she have to be the youngest? Why is this so important? This is where the danger lies.
The slightly controversial Rafeal Merry del Val, Cardinal and Secretary to Pope Pius the X, wrote something called the Litany of Humility. It's a tough pill to swallow but if followed even a tad, it moves priorities to a point where questions like whether these parents are bad people or not will never arise. I'd like to be the first person to raise a kid in my neighborhood that didn't put their parents through hell.

Dreamer!
Re: Abby Sunderland's Dangerous Priorities
Why first? Why the youngest? Because dad's bankrupt, and reality TV is a cruel mistress.

Have we reached the Beverly Hills 90210 alternative universe where all the parents are dumber than their kids? I guess so.

Humility...great word.
Did Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki have a distress beacon?

Wow, the Litany of Humility. That scares me silly. Within 24 hrs of praying for humility, bang, the most humiliating episode of my life. Which, of course, I will not recount here. This + Green Day (dookie was the soundtrack of my youth) makes you my new favorite contributor. But don't let it go to your head.

Thanks Katie O! :)
I'm just throwin' stuff out there, trying to live up to the responsibility of being a contributor. I'm very grateful they asked me. and surprised.
But back to this little girl. She's beautiful, talented, and inspirational to millions so she makes great reality TV. I find nothing wrong with sharing her story on reality TV. She is already being exploited by me and the media. If her father makes a good TV deal, she will get paid for her story and have a little more control over her message. If she just sat there and let the world tell their version of her story, or gave it away to John Quiñónez for free, that wouldn't help anything. She's not a Kardashian. She's genuine.
She will learn humility eventually, it would just be better if she was raised on it.
