Pretty Rave Girl Arizona Immigration Law

I was on Redeye with Greg Gutfeld last week in New York (which is a genius show by the way, it's a shame they have to resort to me), and I made the point that there is no way to logically argue against the attempts by Arizona to reform its immigration law. Everyone who tries just ends up making zero sense with circular reasoning apparent to everyone but themselves. They sound like a 14 year old girl trying to argue why she should be able to stay out all night at a rave. The real answer is "because she wants to and all her friends are going to be there." There's no other argument.

Hon. Susan Bolton doesn't want to support it, so she's put forth some illogical arguments so she can "go to the rave" with all her friends. Her friends are at the rave. She wants to go there too. If she can't go she will "miss out" and not be "cool" anymore. If we don't let them go to the rave, they will all have tantrums.

When I tried to make this point on Redeye, Bill Schultz (who I love) made his arguments against the law and they made little sense but he doesn't want to support it so he's going to keep coming up with reasons why Arizona (who is not a 14 year old girl, but more like a parent) cannot dare to ask people for i.d.

But don't you think this is going to backfire, Joe? Politically, I mean? The Arizona law is so short, so pithy, so unobjectionable on its face -- I have a hard time believing that this ruling is going to do anything other than energize the anti-Obama vote. People hate it when judges do stuff like this, especially as transparently as you've described.

And if the level of discourse we've seen so far on this issue continues, expect to see a post on ThinkProgress tomorrow about how JOE ESCALANTE WANTS TO DEPORT RAVERS!!

Which is of course an entirely separate policy area.

I agree that the ruling will energize the anti-Obama vote. Provided the message is drilled home again and again. It is so straight forward, so obviously a case of judicial activism, that it can have enormous potential to get people riled up. It's also not a difficult issue to follow, unlike 2000+ page healthcare bills or cap & trade, or complicated debt financing schemes. We're a nation of immigrants, and so many of us aren't too far removed from the struggles of the first generation that arrived here, that we feel passionate about the ruling and all that it implies.

Yes it will backfire, IF people actually recognize the reality of the situation. However, that is an "IF"fy proposition, isn't it? Winning increases the credibility of the sound-bytes of the opposition - Here is how I heard the ruling described today: "Even the courts recognized it was a racist law, so they struck it down," How do you argue against a soundbyte? You win.

I think it's one of the worst things that could have happened to the administration if they are planning on more than one term. This kind of judicial activism is pretty easy to run against. However, fighting this and the oil rig moratorium through the courts makes me think they either don't know when to quit, or they could care less about a 2nd term. I'm confused by them.

President Obama continues to overestimate the size of his liberal base. National surveys may indicate that twice as many Americans self-identify as conservative than as liberal - but imagine if you had few interactions with anyone to the right of John Kerry. Now imagine you've never interacted closely with anyone to the right of John Kerry.

I'd also bet the White House assumes an economic rebound will cure all ills... though after considering their economic policies, this brings us back where you started!
