OK, Ricochet. The hour is upon us (or at least drawing close for those of us on the West Coast). What songs would you include on tonight's agenda as some of the best love songs of all time? A few of my nominations:

"To Make You Feel My Love" -- I'll admit to generally being far too bourgeois to get much out of Bob Dylan, but this is a beautiful lyric with a lullaby of a melody. Thankfully, the most popular versions (Garth Brooks, Adele, and Billy Joel, amongst others, have recorded it) don't bear the imprint of Dylan's voice. There's also a version by Jeremy Irons that I recommend googling if you'd like to have the song destroyed for you forever more.

"Come Rain or Come Shine" -- One of the all-time greats. I suggest the Ray Charles version for its aching beauty.

"The Way You Look Tonight" -- I had to limit myself to one standard (sorry, EJHill) and this one takes the cake."When I Fall in Love" would be a close second.

"Michelle" -- Sure, this doesn't quite work unless you happen to be with someone who shares the song's name, but it's surely one of the most beautiful melodies ever churned out by Lennon & McCartney. Other contenders from the Beatles would include "Something" and "Here, There, and Everywhere."

"Let's Stay Together" -- If you're celebrating Valentine's Day without Reverend Al Green ... you're doing something wrong.

You're My Best Friend by Don Williams.

I should see if The Queen Prawn will allow me to share the list of songs I've given her over the last year and a half or so.

I heard this in Clint Eastwood's recent film where he plays a pro baseball recruiter.

You Are My Sunshine by Ray Charles

Love is Like an Itching in My Heart by The Supremes

Of course Etta James and Sunday Kind of Love

And then there's Careless Love in a rendition I like by Madeleine Peyroux

I think Careless Love is more like a blues song now that I think of it.

I know ricochet has its downers, so can I nominate The Cure's "letter to elise?"  Or is that not ok...

I am happily married, and at my wedding (8 years ago!), we listened to Ben Folds' "The Luckiest."  Corny as hell, but still moving.  :)

I suspect it'd be a Geneva Convention violation if we didn't include the entire Norah Jones catalog on the list.

"Love Stinks" by The J. Geils Band. But seriously... "How Sweet It Is" by Marvin Gaye and "Gimme Your Love" by Curtis Mayfield

Danced to "The Luckiest" at my wedding as well. Not corny at all. Beautiful lyric.

I don't know. There's something about Ben Folds that manages to make otherwise saccharine sentiments seem beautiful. I consider that one of the finest songs he's ever written.

Here's the list [pdf]. It's missing a few. If something's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.

And I wonder when I sing along with you,
If everything could ever feel this real forever.
If anything could ever be this good again,
The only thing I'll ever ask of you.
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when.

I had to limit myself to one standard (sorry, EJHill)...

Then sorry, Troy, you seem to have a math problem. Come Rain or Come Shine definitely counts as a "standard" with words by the great Johnny Mercer and music by Harold Arlen written in 1946 for the movie St. Louis Woman.

McArthur Park. Nothing says "love" like "someone left the cake out in the rain. I don't think that I can take, cause it took so long to bake it, and I'll never have that recipe again."Deep, and moving.

Yeah, but I felt like using the Ray Charles version compromised its eligibility. Perhaps it's a gray area. Let me see if there's a Nine Inch Nails version that fully disqualifies it, lest my quota system be upended.

More seriously, how about "The Way You Look Tonight."
