A Republican Could Take Anthony Weiner's Seat?
As Roll Call reported today, "For Democrats who hadn't already started to panic over Tuesday's special election in New York's Brooklyn- and Queens-based 9th Congressional district, now would be a good time to start."
According to a Siena College poll released today, Republican Bob Turner (shown
in the picture) leads Democrat David Weprin by 6 points. The poll led Roll Call to change its rating of the race from "Leans Democratic" to "Tossup."
The district is composed entirely of neighborhoods from Queens and Brooklyn. So you'd think it'd be pretty liberal. But it's actually fairly moderate, and it's been trending rightward. In 2000 it voted 67-30 for Al Gore (about 18 points more Democratic than the rest of the country). In 2004 it voted 56-44 for Kerry (about 7 points more Democratic than the rest of the country). And in 2008 it voted 55-44 for Obama (about 2 points more Democratic than the rest of the country).

Re: A Republican Could Take Anthony Weiner's Seat?
To quote my least favorite broadcaster (or one of them), "I've got a tingly feeling going up my leg".
I think this would be an excellent 'shot across the bow' for the state of next years General Election and the coming primaries.

Re: A Republican Could Take Anthony Weiner's Seat?
This is a weird district where the normal conventional middle class has of Queens has left and not been replaced; Queens Blvd now traverses a somewhat creepy ghost town. It's senior citizens, immigrants, and Orthodox Jews. The Q poll found Turner ahead by six %, but six % of Republicans said they would vote for Weprin. Weprin is loathsome; an Obama minimini he. I predict Turner wins by 8%. And then I hope NY-9 is sucked into to black hole of redistricting!

Thank you ParisParamus! The NY 9th district completely befuddles me. How can a district in N.Y. City vote only 2% more Democratic than the rest of the country? I love hearing info from an insider. I'd love to hear more.
Re: A Republican Could Take Anthony Weiner's Seat?
This is a consummation devoutly to be wished, and it would put an end to talk that the Republicans should vote for Stimulus No. 2.

Peter was all over this a couple of weeks ago. (I don't buy it, FWIW, but I'm happy to be proven wrong!)
