A Record And Rhetoric To Run Against
Today I read the first of what I'm sure will be many investigative pieces about even the most trivial parts of Mitt Romney's life story. Most journalists simply never found their investigative instinct when it came to covering Barack Obama. (In the same way that comedians never found their humorous instinct when it came to Obama, which is what makes this Maureen Dowd column claiming all the jokes about Obama that could be made have already been made so hilarious.) It's hard to run a campaign against both a political opponent and a fawning media.
But unlike 2008, those running to unseat President Obama this year have a huge advantage. And it looks like the Republicans have figured out how to exploit that advantage:

That's pretty great. I'd like to see that one on television occupying two or even three back to back ad spots.

Good ad. The continual juxtaposition of "I won't make any excuses" with the litany of excuses is effective. But then I don't need to be convinced. I have to think this will work well with independents.

We're going to know about every time his tie wasn't tied perfectly when he did his Mormon missionary stint. We're going to know about every friend's sister's housekeeper's nephew's speeding ticket etc etc etc ad nauseum

It's fine as far as it goes. But why don't Republicans use the clip of Charlie Gibson in 2008 asking Obama why he would raise capital gains taxes when higher rates have proven not to raise revenue. In other words, they will not help address the national deficit and debt as Obama now claims.
Is this a case of soft bigotry of low expectations? The GOP thinks Americans won't understand the math?

It looks like the Stupid Party has learned a couple of things since the last presidential election.

Wow. First GOP ad I've seen that doesn't look tone deaf. This is a winner.

Re: A Record And Rhetoric To Run Against
For every ad the Obamabots air about the GOP being "out of touch", the GOP should air an ad like this. It's up to them to keep the focus on Obama's record, because the press will be doing everything but that.

Great ad to "soften up the enemy" before the real battle begins.
I'm looking forward to the smarts of Team Romney kicking into drive. All those people--yes that means you--who were not just concerned, but obsessed with Romney's conservative credentials, and assigned so little value to his competence are about to be wow-ed.
And somehow, I don't think the pro-Romney superPACs are going to put shabby ads on the air either.
PS: Thank you SCOTUS and Citizens United!

Re: A Record And Rhetoric To Run Against
That's really good. By far, the best way to get after Obama is to use his own words like this. My belief is that everybody does take in all the little cognitive dissonances in what he says, but it sort of gets misfiled in their minds because people just do not want to think ill of this president (for the fair-minded, they don't like to think ill of any president actually, and will avoid it as long as possible). But there's got to be a tipping point at which everything just clicks into place, and once that is reached, I expect Obama's support will drop like a stone.
Truth to tell, I've been thinking this point was just around the corner for a couple of years. I think maybe I'm about to be right, finally.
