Heck yeah I did it myself! I did grow my business myself - I'm the one who put in the long hours, I'm the one who worked weekends, I'm the one who paid myself less than my employees for 2 long years till we could sustain ourselves, and I paid for the roads, the police, the fire department, and the schools while doing it too.

Heck yeah I paid for that capital equipment myself too.  In fact I paid for it twice over as every dollar I saved by not paying myself still had 45 cents pulled out in taxes.  Every dollar I paid my employees had a payroll tax on it too.  Heck, my partners and I could buy an entire assembly line every year and hire someone to run it too just on the taxes you suck away.

Oh, and that building I own?  I'm paying for the fire and schools out of the property taxes on that, so don't go giving me a bunch of bull about how I owe you for all of that - it sure wasn't "free" while I was building my business. Maybe your cronies and donors don't have to pay their taxes as they go along, but I've never missed a tax payment yet.

You can't even claim the police, much less the legal system while you use it to squash people you don't like - that just means that I'm succeeding in spite of you.

So don't give me a song and dance about how I didn't do anything - I did everything and more besides.  I did the heavy lifting for myself and for you and all the other self-righteous free-loading hacks out there.

Hear, hear!

You didn't build it. Somebody else did. A perfectly astute reflection of his personal background.

Skipsul, You're my hero.  The business I was running and trying to save ended up closing despite our best efforts on January 24 2011, as a direct result of regulations on not only our business, but others in our city that were our clients, that were forced to close or move because they couldn't afford to do business in Illinois any longer.  I applaud you, sir.  Stay angry and be proud!

Yah that is all well and good, but did you make the sunrise all by yourself? I don't think so. Are you using air? Of course you are. Did you pay for any of these public goods? No you didn't. I think it is time you start paying up.

But did you do any social contribution to your community? You are rich and selfish with your business and need to be socially aware and contributing. (That is heavy sarcasm.) The sheer energy it takes to make payroll and pay taxes to the government is not understood except by those who have had that stress. What worries me is the number of Canadian MBAs who say the same as Obama without the sense of how hard it is to keep a business running. Natalie, you are a star with your business and you must have been heartbroken to close the doors. I am working with a Canadian firm that makes money from the EPA regulations. Their business in California has boomed in the past three years. Where are the journalists or academics who understand the animal spirits of business? They need to step forward and explain that it is businesses role to be in business and to look after their employees and families first. How many business owners go without their salaries? Many. We see the long term finances of the business and it is surprising how little owners will make and be risking their homes.

I third that motion.  Best post of the summer.

I had a little reverie this morning while commuting to work:  At one of the presidential debates, a questioner asks the candidates to define certain line items found in financial statements--depreciation, amortization, working capital, goodwill, retained earnings, deferred income tax expense, capital in excess of par value.  He asks Obama to go first.  Oh, my, that would be hilarious.

Kevin, that's a brilliant suggestion.  Imagine Peter Robinson doing a Presidential debate version of Uncommon Knowledge....

And Skipsul, thank you for your hard work helping to build our country.

Indaba..."What worries me is the number of Canadian MBAs who say the same as Obama without the sense of how hard it is to keep a business running."

Same is true of plenty of American MBAs. Lots of these people go from school into "staff" positions in which they can analyze and pontificate without having actual decision-making responsibility and accountability. (And too often, after several years of this they are promoted into a *substantial* line job in which the consequences of failure, for the organization, will be significant.)

I'm thinking "You lie" would have covered it just as well.

Yeah...ok.

If government is something we all do together, why can't Arizona help enforce immigration laws?
