The Hill published this very interesting article about Marco Rubio.  It notes:

Rubio seemingly ruled out being part of a presidential ticket next year when, during an appearance on “Meet the Press” in May, he told host David Gregory: “I won’t consider it. I don’t want to be the vice president of the United States.”

I hope Rubio will have a change of heart, and I predict he will.  According to the betting markets, there's a 36% chance that not only will he agree to be the nominee he actually will be the nominee.

Marco Rubio has a short career as a state legislator in Florida and has just begun a term as a U.S. Senator.  My Senator, by the way, I voted for him.  But...

He has no more qualifications to be President of the United States than Barack Obama. Other than wishful-thinking that his instincts and intentions may prove to be better, why would you expect a guy with no actual hands-on experience running anything  to perform any better the the guy presently in office - who had no experience running anything.

I like Marco Rubio.  I hope to see him run for Governor one day. And after he's succeeded for a couple of terms at that, maybe then we can then talk about being President.

I too voter for Rubio.  Herkybird's comment is perfect.

He needs more experience. He has potential, but that is not enough.

There is a disturbing tendency to immediately propose a presidential run every time a fresh face makes the headlines. Remember when people were actually suggesting amending the Constitution so new elected Governor Schwarzenegger could run? Now it's Rubio, Christie, Ryan, the list goes on. Enough of this nonsense. Give these people time to mature and season, to gain the breadth of experience needed for the presidency. Enough time so we can be sure we're electing a President, not a fad.

And when did our youth-worshiping culture manage to delegitimize experience as a factor in the job resume?

When people say "more experience needed" they usually mean "more experience needed as a politician". I object. Of course political skills aren't irrelevant but I'm much more interested in Mr. Rubio's experience before he ran for public office.

Marco Rubio was in the Florida legislature for 9 years—a bit more than a short stint, unless life-time tenure is the standard—and Speaker for the last two years.  He was also an intern for a US representative for 3 years and city commissioner before he ran for the legislature.  Hence, he has significant experience dealing with and leading large public organizations.

My reservation about him is that he almost certainly does not meet any plausible interpretation of the “natural born citizen” requirement for President.  He could probably get away with it, as others have, but it would do the country, the conservative/Constitutional movement, and the Republican party no good if he did.
