This passed by my window. The notable thing was the carrying of sticks--you can see if you look closely--and the fact that they were identical sticks.

I asked what was going on, they invited me to join them. I tried to decide what to do--as a journalist, I thought I should follow, but then again, I've seen so many demonstrations here that just don't make the news, and I knew this one wouldn't either. Even if it were to descend into an orgy of violence--and my gut said it wouldn't--it would be just one more video on YouTube, and no one would know what to make of it in a sea of noise.

Reported by other journalists, in passing: Police stopped a "very small" nationalist demo near Taksim Square. Reported: The urban wing of the PKK has threatened civilians and tourists. Reported: Taksim Square closed off. Reported: Tensions rising between Kurds and Turks.

The Speaker of the Parliament has called for calm. The prime minister is in Somalia, and it seems everyone in the Turkish media is thrilled about that.

When the reports came in of Turks defending their neighborhoods in London with kebab spears, I wasn't surprised. I'm not surprised that the police are so far keeping a lid on things here, either, from what I can see, which is exactly what's in front of me and no more. I hope it can hold.
