Re: 2,997
I first heard about the attacks through rumors I overheard while walking between college classes. Someone said 10,000 died.
Thankfully, the real number wasn't that high. But, from what I understand, it could have been if not for the grace of God.

That's a heap better than the flags perennially installed on Santa Monica Beach to "commemorate" our Iraq and Afghanistan war dead. Those are intended as a protest against the war, and an implicit accusation that they all died in service of an evil cause.

Re: 2,997
The school where I teach in Minnesota did something similar on Friday. Here is a link to some video: http://www.providenceacademy.org/about_us/media/. When you get there, click on PA marks 9/11. This was a student initiated project, some kids from the Pro-life club started this several years ago with little tiny flags, but this year the school bought them bigger flags. It's pretty impressive.
The attacks happened a week after our school opened ten years ago.

There's a similar display at Kennesaw Battlefield National Park near Marietta, Georgia, only it has full sized flags. It's quite breathtaking. See here

There's a similar display at my school, only it has even smaller flags. It's still very cool. It's a pretty scene.
