Canadian PM Stephen Harper

Allegedly at the insistence of Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada, a reference to the 1967 lines as a basis for a future border between Israel and Palestine was removed from the G8's statement calling for the resumption of negotiations. Harper has declined to confirm or deny his hand in the deletion, but Israeli PM Bibi Netanyahu is reported to have phoned Harper the day before the G8 summit. “The Canadians were really very adamant, even though Obama expressly referred to 1967 borders in his speech last week,” a European diplomat said.

Other members of the G8, including British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have endorsed President Obama's citing of the 1967 lines.

Here is Stephen Harper speaking on November 8, 2010 on what he sees as the moral obligation to defend Israel, whatever the political cost:

If Harper keeps this up, someone will name a US aircraft carrier after him. On Israel, the guy is a rock, no question and makes me proud to be a Canadian.

Boy this is great, I was so very happy when the Tories took a majority in parliament, darn proud to be a Canadian everyday of my life, but today, with this news, I'm also proud of our prime minister!

Huh.  After years of hearing it from our Lefty friends, maybe it's time for American conservatives to start threatening to move to Canada?

I've always said that if we're going to socialize our medical system, better to move to country that has more experience in operating a nationalized health service AND that has better beer.  Staunch support for Israel is an added plus.  Canada now tops the list.

Amazing times we live in when leadership from less powerful countries like Canada display greater resolve as opposed to our American version of Neville Chamberlain.

So only Canada stood between sanity and the G8 in essence supporting the likes of Syria. No doubt once Assad finishes up his little police action an elite State Department tiger team will be dispatched to the region to insure a quick transfer of the Golan Heights to this misunderstood reformer.

Is there anyone who still doubts that another war in the Middle East is now inevitable? The exact shape is perhaps yet to be determined but the pieces are all in place it seems and the overwhelming majority of our leadership in the West appear determined to take any action that throws fuel on this smoldering inferno.

John Howard couldn't have expressed it better.
