Rise of the Progressive Era
Can anyone recommend a good book on the rise of the Progressive Era? I really want to know what the impetus was for all of those constitutional amendments and all of that federal legislation in the early part of the 20th century.

I just ordered How Progressives Rewrote the Constitution by Richard Epstein. I don't know if this will answer my question, but I know that it will be an interesting an informative read.
Greg Cook: I haven't read the Epstein book, although I'm sure it's a good one. While you wait, you might take a look at Thomas Sowell's short essays on the subject (if you haven't already): http://thenewamerican.com/opinion/thomas-sowell/10872-the-progressive-legacy

There is also Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to The Politics of Meaning by Jonah Goldberg.
It provides a good history of the rise of Progressivism from the early 20th century up through more modern times. It might not cover the amount of depth on the subject you want but I found it insightful in how Progressivism was very much in vogue in the early 20th century.
Peter Meza: Thanks - I already read it, but obviously I need a re-read. Parts of the book stuck with me, but exactly how Progressivism arose to the extent that it is covered did not.

If none of the others mentioned above get you what you're looking for you can try "A Godly Hero" by Michael Kazin. It's about William Jennings Bryan and my be helpful in some way.

Elizabeth Herring: Liberal Fascism....Jonah Goldberg....buy it on Kindle (or download into computer on free Kindle software from Amazon). I think this is the best way to research the book. You can highlight the points you need.
