Is there a name for the part of Quebec that's south of the St. Lawrence but north of the NY border?

A significant part of that area is officially termed the "Eastern Townships." I spent summers just south of there, as a boy, in northern Vermont--I always heard them referred to as the "English Townships." The English townships essentially adjoin the Vermont border. Up until the Bush Administration decided to harden the border, it was really kind of hard to tell that the border was even there. (The chief of the customs service at Newport was also the pastor of our church.)

Fred Cole: So are they culturally English speaking or Quebecois?

John Murdoch: Fred--

Mostly English-speaking. When there is talk of secession in Quebec, the English Townships immediately start talking about secession from Quebec. The Canadian federal courts ruled several years ago that a) Quebec could secede; but the English Townships could secede from Quebec.

Were they to do so, they would likely be annexed by Vermont.
