A Facebook friend of mine is claiming that most Planned Parenthood locations don't even perform abortions. How do I find out the stats on this?

That is interesting Ottoman, as I had come to the opposite conclusion.

In Michigan only four of 24 clinics provide "Abortion Services." Though all the others offer "Abortion Referrals" and "Emergency Contraception" aka, the morning after pill.

After reading your answer I checked Wisconsin, and 3 of 27 clinics provide abortions.  Interestingly, "Abortion Referrals" were not publicly offered.

Albert, if you look at the pie chart on page 8 of this PDF you will see that, according to PP's numbers, roughly 325,000 abortions are performed annually at PP. However much Planned Parenthood is subsidized by taxpayers, it seems to me entirely likely that more money equals more clinics offering such services.

Ottoman Umpire: You are correct, Palaeologus.  My mistake was starting with California.  (Words that are applicable to many circumstances.)

Corrected.

On the Planned Parenthood website, you can look up every location, by state, to see what services are performed.

For all states, plus the District of Columbia, I counted a total of 717 euphemistically-described "Health Centers." (I wonder how the fetus feels about mom going into a Planned Parenthood Health Center? Probably not so great.  But I digress...)

Technically, all of them provide the morning after pill, so on that basis 100% of Planned Parenthood locations provide very early term abortions.

But in terms of what Planned Parenthood itself describes as "abortion services:"

  • 315 locations provide abortion services
  • 326 locations provide abortion referrals
  • 76 locations provide neither

Using that definition, your friend would be right.  I'm not sure what it proves, because the "full service" ones are probably larger and would get more traffic.  But strictly speaking, he appears to be correct.
