Has any presidential candidate ever picked his running mate before the convention and run as part of a team for the nomination?
Can they even do that? I'm wondering, if you have a 'seriously flawed,' but occasionally brilliant, and always energizing, candidate, if that would ever be a strategy.

Ronald Reagan in 1976 picked his running mate (Sen. Schweiker) before the convention but after all primary voting. They did not run together as a team during the primaries, however.
