How can I protest against Earth Hour with a pithy response that lays bare the futility of the exercise, the self-important preaching of the converted and the hypocrisy of the faithful adherents?

skipsul: Earth Hour?  Damn, that's when I was supposed to have my annual dophin fry - bought a special tub of whale grease for the fryer an all too.

"Let's face it, Earth Day was getting tiresome, but Earth Hour... it really signals commitment.

But you know what would be even better?  Earth Second. (Close eyes and hold breath for one second.)

There.  Mother Earth just smiled a bit, don't you think?"

Absurd symbolism meet Reality:

During the 2010 Earth Hour in the city of Uusikaupunki in Finland, a 17-year-old female motorcyclist hit a 71-year-old man, who was walking on the street instead of the sidewalk for an unknown reason. The man died from his injuries, while the motorcyclist and her passenger were uninjured. At the time of the accident the street lights had been turned off as part of the Earth Hour.

If I can remember such a trivial event, I will rush right out into the back yard at 8:30 and turn on the lights in our swimming pool.  That will be a modest expense to me but a visible protest to everyone who happens to fly over.

But what happens if Comissioner Gordon really needs to get in touch with Batman...

"Wouldn't it be great if the sudden stress on the power grid from everyone turning their lights back on at the same time when 'Earth Hour' is over actually knocked out the power for a week or so?  Wouldn't that be great?!!!"

You turned off the lights for a whole hour?  You're a regular Jeanne d'Arc... Ages.

Ottoman Umpire: I post that safe in the knowledge that negative votes aren't allowed.

Natalie: Dude, really?

Ottoman Umpire: Yeah, that was bad.

Natalie: Yeah, don't do that again.

Two questions:

  1. What do you want people to do:  go back to using candles and torches (dirty and inefficient), or sit around in the dark?
  2. If it's so great, why stop at an hour?
