In America no one should go bankrupt because they make stupid financial decisions, either. But failure to be wise in planning for an uncertain futre has consequences.

In America no one should go bankrupt because the President violated bankruptcy rules and made their GM bonds worthless.

In America no one should go bankrupt because they drank before driving. But a healthy society requires that people accept responsibility for their actions.
OSweet: Good, but: While a drunk driver acted irresponsibly, and directly caused his misfortune, many if not most cancer victims did not.

Tom Lindholtz: Point is, stuff happens. The "prudent man" takes pains to be prepared. Our Nanny State society expects to be taken care of. Conservatives favor cheap, affordable medical disaster insurance so that people CAN be prudent.

How about: "Agreed. But what happens when governments go bankrupt, trying to solve all of society's problems?" Then:"Conservatives agree that people should be protected against health catastrophes. But we're suspicious about big government solutions formulated by social engineers holed up in DC; we have to be extremely careful how we go about this."

OSweet: As concise as possible.
