This is the "Young" Chauvinist asking for some...homework help you could say. At my school we are studying the Civil Rights Movement.  I am allowed to choose among speeches separated into the following categories. I've included some examples in each category to give you a taste of what they're looking for. I am allowed to recommend speeches not on the list and I was wondering if anybody out there (Mr. Robinson?) would like to recommend some for me. Particularly a good conservative-point-of-view speech.

  • The Founding of a Nation:
    • Give me Liberty or Give Me Death-Patrick Henry
    • Civil Disobedience-Henry David Thoreau
    • To the American Troops-George Washington
    • Farewell Address-George Washington
  • Forming a National Identity:
    • What Is Your Fourth of July to Me?-Frederick Douglass
    • I Will Fight No More Forever-Chief Joseph
    • The Anti-Slavery Society-Lucretia Mott
    • I Want Women to Have Their Rights-Sojourner Truth
  • A Vision of 20th Century America:
    • On the Pulse of Morning-Maya Angelou
    • The Great Society-Lyndon Baines Johnson
    • Ask Not What Your Country Can Do for You-John F. Kennedy
    • I Have a Dream-Martin Luther King Jr.
    • Americanism and the Foreign Born-Woodrow Wilson
  • Challenges of the Twentieth Century:
    • Farewell Address-Jimmy Carter
    • Let America Be American Again-Langston Hughes
    • A Call for Justice-John F.Kennedy
    • AmerRican-Tato Laviera
    • The Great Common Hope-Eleanor Roosevelt
  • Exhibition Pieces:
    • Preamble to the Constitution or Declaration of Independence
    • Concord Hymn-Ralph Waldo Emerson
    • Liberty Tree-Thomas Paine
    • The Earth is Precious-Chief Seattle
    • I Hear America Singing-Walt Whitman

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Calvin Coolidge's speech commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  Accessible--and rock solid.

Forming a National Identity
- Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address

A Vision of 20th Century America
- Ronald Reagan's "A Time for Choosing" (1964)
- Ronald Reagan's  1984 RNC Convention speech ("Shining City on a Hill")

Also, The Right Words: Great Republican Speeches That Shaped History by Wynton C. Hall has many good suggestions.
