Flyover 37 – Soto on Overseers, Obamacare, and Papal Encyclicals
Everyone’s favorite guest, one Mr. Frank Soto, stops by everyone’s favorite podcast this week to discuss the Supreme Court on Obamacare, and a brief conversation about Pope Francis.

“Reality is inherently conservative”.
Quote of the day. Great job guys.
I do not think it is pretentious for “flyover country” to cite favorably British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. She represented in Britain the same character that “flyover country” does in the US – the oft-forgotten “ordinary person.” She was mocked and ridiculed by the British establishment because she was a “mere shopkeeper’s daughter.”
Re the Pope’s comments on people who make weapons, and the extremes of passisivism.
My son, while still in high school, had another boy tell him that the other boy would never be able to use violence against another, even if that other person were in the midst of committing violence against an innocent third person, because that would be unloving. My son’s question was, “how is it loving toward the innocent third person to not intervene?” No answer. Some people seem to keep trying to avoid the fact that there are evil people in this world who will do evil things (in my opinion because of the influence of Satan).
In defense of James, he was talking about having Thatcher in our opening music segment. I’ve cited her favorably many times, and heartily recommended Claire’s biography (which I’ve also done before on the podcast). I agree with your points – I’d love to have a Thatcher type in the US right now. The thought of a president who draws that much rage and hatred from labor unions kind of makes me drool… this is the allure of Scott Walker, if he can live up to the hype.
Time constraints (1:01:30)? This is a podcast, it could run for two hours, three hours, eight hours. Not that anyone would still be listening, but isn’t there an easier, more honest way to shut up Terry and Frank?
I’m not going to name names because I don’t want to be accused of being a Terry-basher, but if the person on this podcast with the valley-girl grammar would expunge the word ‘like’ (fer ‘xample; 50:20), you would have, like, a 25% time savings.
hahaha – it’s his schtick! I’m the guy who starts a sentence and then loses my train of thought 5 sentences later…
But yeah, we have found it very easy to talk for 2 or 3 hours (and it has happened in the past), but feedback has been that professional podcasts keep a rigid schedule. We didn’t hit on at least 3 of our topics, though, so you might get another podcast next week.
Do you guys ever look at member posts and then invite guests around those topics.?
Yes. Very often, I’ll see a post and really like it and then ask a person on to talk specifically about that topic. We’re a bit constrained by availability, though, since our recording time is generally in the morning, and many of our guests work normal hours. One of the reasons Frank is a favorite guest of ours (apart from the obvious) is that his “bask in the crazy” posts are right in line with what we would be talking about anyway. :)
Why have you not adopted the MP3 format? I can not download to the device I have.
Is it a cellphone? .m4a is somewhat more compact, so I think that’s why they use it over at soundcloud. One easy thing to do is download the soundcloud app and subscribe through that. We’re also on stitcher and iTunes. If none of that works, let me know and I’ll try to come up with something.
Sorry I’m like, late to the party guys. I’ve like had so much going on in my life. It’s hella crazy brahs. Love all the comments and I swear I’ll read that Berlinski book, like, never.
