First Ever Philly Meetup – But Wait, There’s More!
It was a perfect summer evening on Rittenhouse Square as, one by one, Ricochet members strolled up to Devon Seafood and gathered at a sidewalk cafe table for wine and genial introductory chats. Julia PA, Pencilvania, Freesmith, Katievs & husband eventually moved inside to find Anglo Feline just arrived with a delightful friend from her neighborhood (together they constitute almost half of the total Republicans in their precinct, they said) and a charming Southern Gentleman friend, also a stalwart Philly Republican. Within minutes, the group was completed with the appearance of RushBabe and Ray Kujawa, fresh from the west coast and ready for their classical music workshop at Curtis Institute.
I have to truly say the evening flew by, from wine and honey-muffins, through surf and turf, and on to coffee and desserts, with never a lull in the conversation. We discussed music and voting practices, kids and Mainline Protestantism, European breakfasts and impeachment strategy. In all, a fantastically fun and energizing evening!
And in honor of a couple Ricochetti who wished they could come, a little toast:
But WAIT! There’s more: next Wednesday another Philly Meetup, June 11 at Tir Na Nog starting at 5:30! If you want to join in the fun, PM FightinPhilly or leave a comment here. Thanks, Ricochet! Because of you, being a conservative in Philadelphia feels a little less lonely!

Mahvelous, Pen! Thank yunz all…Great to see you…
Was Nanda drunk under the table with a lampshade again? ;-)
Aww, Dime! You found me out…
Pencil,
How much do I make to your favorite charity to destroy the negative? How do I tell my wife I wasn’t bowling?
Dime, I should have clarified: we toasted Nanda, but you ARE toast.
Pencil,
if you check the PIT you will see I used the joke already. Please send the royalty check to my inbox.
I am not going into that locker room, thank you. Not without a bucket of bleach & a taser.
Your attitude needs a royalty check.
No negatives found at the meetup. Only positives. I did, however, walk out clutching one of the restaurant’s napkins. Made a special trip back there this morning to return it. Got laughs from the front desk staff. We are all checked in at Curtis. Ray and I have a suite to ourselves, on the floor with the terrace. There was a nice faculty recital after dinner, and Ray has already had a reading orchestra rehearsal. Chamber music tomorrow. Fun!
Nice stamp design, Pencilvania.
Randy, we didn’t want anyone to be undocumented.
wait… I didn’t get toasted?! :)
Rushbabe, totally off topic, but I bought a new violin this past weekend, after a trial period. I’ll be teaching my 2 y/o to play starting on his 3rd birthday (we Suzuki method folks are just crazy like that!), and mine had too many cracks to be repaired for any reasonable price.
So much fun breaking in a new violin!
Mr. Katievs and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Such an interesting and civilized set of people.
Everyone felt like someone we’d like to get to know better and hang out with more often. Many thanks for organizing it, Pencilvania!
Ryan, I toast you right now, for your plan to introduce your little guy to music!
We had several great conversations regarding music at the table, what with Rushbabe & Ray playing violin & clarinet, and Julia PA being a music teacher & playing viola in an orchestra. My kids, after some initial music lessons, all found singing in choral groups to be their thing, and I highly recommend instrument and/or choral instruction for any child. Not only did my kids learn discipline with singing, but it just happens that the repertoire of really good music includes a vast number of religious-based works, which I think is just simply good for your soul. I’m sure your son’s mind and soul will be blessed by music.
Pencil,
I am starting to turn green with envy. I might need some darning after. Why does everyone follow the Pencil’s lead?
Dime, now I am a bit sorry you didn’t come. We could have used a few more of the opposite socks.
It really WAS a perfect summer night on Wednesday- glad you guys got the weather and sounds like it was a great night. Hope we can match your satisfaction quotient on the 11th!!
Oh, we would have loved to have met with everyone there!
