Flop Sweat in Texas

Coaches, CEOs and campaign managers often tell their charges, “never let them see you sweat.” Cool confidence rattles your opponents, making them second-guess their game plan or poll numbers.

The opposite of this air of inevitability is the flop sweater. A rookie stand-up who realizes the audience isn’t getting his jokes. The boxer begging his trainer to call the fight. Or, Wendy Davis.

Last week the Texas Democrat attacked her opponent Greg Abbott for somehow profiting off the accident that confined him to a wheelchair. Pundits from the right and left groaned at the ugly “Hail Mary” ad and wondered how this darling of the coastal elites had sunk so low. What they didn’t realize is that Ms. Davis had not yet begun to sink.

Today on Twitter, the pink-sneakered abortophile tried a new attack on her Republican gubernatorial opponent:

Did you see that? Well read it again because decades from now, poli-sci professors will mock this ad to your grandkids. Again, all of political Twitter was unified — a rare occurrence — in contempt for Davis’ embarrassing face plant. Since Abbott is married to a Latina, perhaps he never saw a need to mention miscegenation on the campaign trail — much like every other politician outside of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? script.

A few hours later, Team Wendy released another bizarre attack on Abbott via press release:

This is not the closing message of a winning campaign. But I’m glad to see Christine O’Donnell’s campaign team find work again.

The “Abortion Barbie” moniker is well-earned.  Wendy Davis’ (somewhat) attractive exterior is but a thin veneer covering a diseased soul; the perfect symbol for today’s Democratic Party.

The Wendy Davis campaign accidentally bought 400 rakes and laid them all out in campaign headquarters, then threw on some boot-stompin’ music turned up to 11.

You really can’t make this stuff up.  I didn’t need more evidence that our polity is infused with unimaginable levels of stupidity and mendacity, but hey – there it is.

All I can think of is that line in The Fellowship of the Ring when Bilbo said “I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve…” and all the hobbits were trying to work out whether it amounted to a compliment or not.

It is the best explanation I’ve seen for Davis’s behavior.

My theory previously had been Wendy Davis knew she was going to lose, so decided the only thing left was to take the prize for the Worst Statewide Campaign of 2014.  Given competition like Alison Lungren Grimes and Bruce Braley, Davis really had to swing for the fences.

I thought she was leading at one point or was that media wishful thinking?  Which btw, media is so in love with the left (or threatened by them) that the non-left basically fights with one hand tied behind their backs on every race and issue

If Wendy’s campaign wanted to be taken a little more seriously, for the last week they could just post cheesecake photos of their candidate (as could Alison’s campaign.)

As perfect a description of the appalling Ms. Davis as could be hoped for Mike. If you’re in the Austin area any time soon I owe you a beer. Make that Bier.

    Jon,

Really you shouldn’t count your chickens before they are deep fried.

Inside sources have told me that Wendy has hired her old law school mentor as a campaign adviser.  This guy is not to be under estimated.

His kind of strategic courtroom thinking is legendary. Now he will try to apply it directly in the political realm. In this documentary video Wendy appears at 1:35 under the pseudonym of Judi West. Beware Gregg Abbott, When Willy and Wendy get together they are capable of almost anything.

    Regards,

    Jim

Wendy is doing exactly what you would expect from her campaign. She knows she’s not going to win.

What she wants is to get the Austin young female liberal transplants agitated and worked up.

Her campaign is entirely aimed at getting her natural constituency worked up…for the next election.

At least, that’s the only way I can make sense of this absurdity. Perhaps, the people running her campaign are really that stupid. She sure seems to be.

Odd how one could veer out of one’s late term abortion supporting lane into preposterous and disgusting treatment of others.  The truth of the woman is the same, but she’s lost narrative control.  Don’t smell too much of sure loser Wendy, as you’ll be summarily abandoned.

Brilliant! Greg Abbot should put out that ad himself, as a spoof of Wendy Davis’s ads.

Mom and Apple Pie? Wendy’s for them. Greg’s keeping mum.

Greg Abbott gets to lounge about all day in that chair of his while struggling Texans have to get up and go to work every day.

Greg Abbott’s wife still won’t reveal when he stopped beating her.

It was the media.  A lone poll came out showing her down by less than double digits and the New York Times wet itself.

I’ve seen campaigns in full collapse (both inside and outside) enough times to recognize all the signs.  Usually, it’s about money. Sometimes it’s about message disconnects, sometimes it’s about staff, sometimes it’s just the year.

In Wendy’s case, it’s about everything.

The deep well of pure crazy from which her supporters are drawn and their unfailing devotion to Wendy even as she sets her campaign on fire is a perfect example of the Democratic Party’s increasing dedication to stunt-casting and emotional lock-in.

Expect Davis truthers to emerge on November 6th. After all, no one THEY know voted for Abbott.

And would Abbott defend laws that reopen the slave trade? We don’t know. His campaign has not made any statements about that issue at all. His silence speaks volumes.

    Future campaign ads:

Why has Greg Abbott never publicly expressed sympathy for the victims of Jeffrey Dahmer?

Mount Vesuvius explodes and wipes out entire town of Pompeii.  What has Greg Abbott done about it?  Not a damn thing.

O.J. Simpson is still looking for the killer of his ex-wife.  Could it be Greg Abbott?  In no instance has Abbott ever denied it.
