In an extremely rare move, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., has announced she'll go to trial rather than accept the ethics charges against her from a House ethics subcommittee. From The Hill:
Waters is accused of helping facilitate $12 million in Troubled Asset Relief Program funds for OneUnited Bank, of which her husband was a director and stockholder. OneUnited Bank executives had also contributed to Waters' campaigns.
More details in Politico, which broke the story. This Wall Street Journal story shows a role Barney Frank had in the scandal as well. This is probably the last thing Democrats want or need facing a tough 2010 election. Will President Obama ask Waters to resign like he none-too-subtly suggested to Rep. Charlie Rangel today?

Re: That's some Friday night news dump
I question the ethics of the ethics committee as they continue to overlook Harry Reid's many land deals which "earned" him lots of money. Last I heard he's still "serving" in Congress.

Re: That's some Friday night news dump
I suppose when you are living in Versailles, the normal rules do not apply. Members of the ruling oligarchy are not guided by a moral compass like the rest of us common folk. What we see as deep and endemic corruption, they view as just business as usual. I imagine that in his own mind, Mr. Rangel doesn't believe he's done anything wrong. He lost the capacity for introspection long ago. When corruption becomes habitual, it's viewed as "normal" in the eyes of the offender. I can imagine that Mr. Rangel is genuinely confused right now by what he perceives as a gross overreaction to his mere peccadilloes.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not excusing any of this behaviour. The entire ruling class needs to be sent packing before we can restore the nation to our (small "r") republican roots. That includes Messrs. Graham, McCain, and Lott whether they are still holding office or not. The American people need to clean out the entire incestuous nest. I keep referring back to Codevilla because I think he has it right. His ideas are resonating with the American people. The push-back has already begun.

Lose Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters in the same Congressional session? Bestill my heart.

Maxine will never pay a price for her lack of integrity. The precedent is Adam Clayton Powell, who was a local hero till he died.
