Are You – For Eighty Sixing Life? Dadgummit, I Guess Not.

Well, I suppose I’m pro-life now. I don’t want to be. I arrive here with feet dragging, slunk shoulders and hanging head. As if resigning to a dreaded chore.

I’d prefer to remain with my peers, my contemporaries. I’d much rather adopt and reap the many perks of convenience in a pro-choice lifestyle. I wish I could resolve the consequences of insignificant hook-ups with RU-486. I want to maintain the impression that my career is too important and it’s just not the right time. I’d rather stick to the beaten path of overpopulation concerns, unfit parents, or unfit world, than to that of wearing a condom or abstention.

I want to stay with the cool kids. Thanks a lot, Planned Parenthood, now I’ll never get picked for dodgeball.

No sudden epiphany, no Jacob-esque battle with the angels of my faith. I don’t align myself with the pro-life “nut jobs” because any crisis of conscience or need of crusade. I get here simply because you obviously can’t believe anything the cool kids tell you.

It was bound to happen. I’ve held a smoldering suspicion they were lying to me for some time. Primarily, when they tried camouflaging abortion as women’s health.

“You don’t have a uterus! You know nothing, Jon Snow!”, kept the tides of doubt at bay for a long time. Not daring to question anything I clearly had no business questioning.

But those numbers — those pesky, inconvenient numbers — kept rearing their ugly little heads and ever so slowly the leak became a flood. The dam broke with Planned Parenthood being exposed for what it is. Wholesale, publicly funded murder. IMG_0102

Like many in the Senate, I’ve not watched the videos. I’ve no need and, besides, I couldn’t hear them over the din of how dear Cecil’s life was.

I figure, as I read recently, were their mission was so noble, they’d be heralding it from rooftops. Not, as it seems, getting partisan jurists to block the onslaught of damning media that threaten their very existence.

So. I’ll be over here, I guess. With the nut jobs, whining on and on about precious life, blah blah blah.

I just wish they had more fashion sense.

Nut job culture takes getting used to — for example, a fair number of us are teetotalers.  Some days I feel like Lord Charles Fox in the movie Amazing Grace, who walks in to a meeting of abolitionists for the first time:

    “Any of you saints drink?”

(Awkward silence, people look around, then finally Thomas Clarkson pulls out a flask and speaks.)

    “Well this one bloody does!”

It is not murder.  It is the legal taking of human life.  Without due process, without an appeal.

I have always been for life. Sunday my wife asked me what was wrong. I told her that I have been a blue funk over this PP thing. It is so difficult to understand the pro death crowd. I have a friend who has no children, that is pro choice. His dog managed to catch a raccoon but could not kill it. He couldn’t either. It was beyond repair so I put it out of its misery . Later that day I asked him how he could not kill a raccoon but was ok with unborn babies. Our relationship has never been the same. So be it.

    Hallelujah!

I imagine it’s been easier for me, BC.  I was never one of the cool kids, and gave up trying to be some time in the early 90s.

Welcome aboard! Did they teach you how to sing Kumbaya yet?

Anyway, this should be on the Main Feed so others who might be thinking, “I really don’t want to be associated with ‘those people’, but this whole ‘publicly funded, murder’, thing is pretty bad” will know that they are not alone. (And that DFLA graphic is pretty good too)

I’ve always thought “kumbaya” the other teams fight song, no?

I might as well ask as long as I’m here, but, how exactly does the main feed get fed? And, while we’re answering questions, how does one delete posts from their own feeds, pray tell.

You might be right about the song choice, but the few Lefty protests I had to walk through involved a bunch of white people singing “We Shall Overcome” (overcome what? I didn’t stick around to find out).

Editors decide what goes to Main feed based on . . . well whatever they want to base it on.

One day I might have to do this up as a post…

I was in Ethics class, and we were going over abortion. The class was pretty much unanimous in their support of “choice”, all but one slightly mousy girl who objected because of her religious convictions. She was pecked at by the oh-so-secular guardians of politically correct thought that it annoyed me. They went from insulting her position to insulting her faith to insulting her.

“They should leave her alone. She’s not hurting anyone. They’re a bunch of bullies…”

I decided to give them somebody else to fight with. I engaged them strictly from a secular standpoint. I don’t know if I convinced any of them. I convinced myself, however, and there I remain.

I, too, have always been . . . uncomfortable . . . around this topic, for all the reasons you list.  I have preferred to punt, to agree with Dennis Miller: “one penis, no vote”.  Or “Ok, I don’t like it, but I don’t claim to be smart enough to make this choice for everybody else – let each person sort it out with God themselves.”

Watching (or, more accurately, not watching) these videos has made me ashamed.

    Bruce, you should be ashamed.

And yet, you’re following a path similar to mine.  Sure, I am absolutely pro-life now.  But as a young man, I started off not really thinking much about the issue.  Then I fell in with a bunch of Baptists, and I kind of absorbed their point of view to some extent, even though I wasn’t as fired up about it.  (I remember a young lady my age describing abortion as murder; that language shocked me at the time.)  Now I’m settled on the view that pregnant women carry human babies, and that it’s generally wrong to kill babies.  It’s about as uncomplicated as as uncomplicated can get.

But I had to wake up.  For whatever reason, it doesn’t happen overnight.  And looking back with fresh eyes, it’s natural to say, “what was I thinking?”

I remember my Medical Ethics Class in undergrad when we discussed this.  We read 6 pro-abort articles and 1 anti-abort article, but, because I came from a fairly rural University, the class was pretty evenly split on the question.  The arguments were the best that por-aborts has written up to that point, and most of those that agreed took their number as proof for their position being right.  I found several others with Yahoo (man that was a long time ago!) in 5 minutes and brought them up, only to have the Professor dismiss them as “irrelevant” because they were “religious”.

The one thing that was always the starting point of all the pro arguments was that pregnancy just magically happened.  Here is the most sophisticated one we read about: people seeds.  I pointed out that what they were doing in these arguments were to make women completely passive with no agency in how pregnancy happened.  The professor agreed, and then told me that that is how it in reality because everyone had to have sex.

That was the argument, that’s it.  I have never been able to take pro-aborts seriously again.

    Mr. Chops,

Do you think we came out of the box this way? I held up a pro sign at a Dukakis rally! Pro Planned Parenthood? Of course…. and every other feminist cause. I voted for Clinton……..twice……..those events were the milder side of my life. After that last election, the tide was starting to turn hard. It was a gradual process for me too  …..feet dragging……..then could not chime in with certain friend discussions – practically had to bite a hole in my tongue at times, taxes going up, my paycheck going down…….I started wondering why unions had to be so threatening to their own if they were so great, just one thing after another….. I began to question……….  But it all one day fell into place and realized I could not relate to the party of my parents anymore. It wasn’t the same place.    I went into political rehab and came out a conservative. I’m still me. Just better.

PS….Someone mentioned most conservatives are tea-totalers. I like black, green and herbal as well as a nice glass of red wine with dinner (or two). I also like to think I still dress nice….

Think of it as an adventure!

Wow, that people seeds video is really stretching things, isn’t it? These seeds are “floating around in the air” evidently. So, that’s how it happens. I always did wonder. But, what’s with the carpet business? I mean I’ve heard people (usually guys for some reason) ask if the carpet matches the drapes and all but could that be what the video is suggesting?

It’s all so confusing, isn’t it? Pregnancy just happens nowadays. It didn’t used to be like that, but it is now. These seeds are just getting sprayed around everywhere and they get lodged in your carpet. Wow — like that really is a great analogy. Brilliant people on the pro-abortion side.

Oh, and don’t forget: you did EVERYTHING you could to keep the seeds out of your carpet — I mean everything, well… except for begging Paul McCartney to walk in and dust your carpet with seeds. But — you know, like: Paul McCartney, that’s like really different. It wouldn’t be just anyone who’d be allowed in.

Welcome, Buster, it’s great to have you on board! I think a few pro-lifers might have sung Kumbaya a long time ago, but I can’t swear to it. Somebody sang that song when I was a kid, but I can’t remember whether it was the pro-lifers or the liberal nuns at school. I have a horrible feeling it might have been both.

My husband says that the Kumbaya song was made up as a joke, and a few naive people took it seriously :)
