What About the Video?

I’m in New York, where I attended the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty’s annual Canterbury Medal Dinner last night. This year’s winner, Elder Dallin H. Oaks, spoke about the rising threats to religious liberty. You can read his remarks here.

The Becket Fund is something of an ACLU for religiou…

Dallin Oaks?  Wasn’t he one of the characters from The Hobbit?

  2. Kay of MT

“message” of a movie virtually no one will ever see “must be rejected by all who respect our common humanity,” that “the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam,” and that we all should “condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims, and Shiite pilgrims.”

Mollie, that remark still enrages me, I can’t believe he said it, I post that remark whenever I have the opportunity, especially to my progressive family members and friends.

  3. The King Prawn

I wasn’t going to put this on here, but…

    whitewash.jpg

And let’s not forget they went so far as to create a video of their own (at our expense, of course) to blame the attack on the youtube video as well. They went to extraordinary lengths to tell this particular lie.

Yes! It still bothers me, too! And it bothered me even before I realized it was all based on falsehoods.

I have been pondering how the video connects up for days and this is the first time I see some clarity on how that came to be.  Two comments:

    1)  It seems a bit of a leap to blame the video just because it “aired on Egyptian TV in the days before the event” without knowing more context on the broadcast.  That is, did the broadcast claim the video was American or what?

    2) Rewind back 10 years (see recent piece in Foreign Policy here) to when the left accused the GWB administration for cooking the evidence on Iraq WMD when the CIA director called it a slam dunk and ALL of our allies agreed with.  Here we have and example where (to keep the basketball analogies going) the best the intelligence community could muster were long 3-point attempts and those same folks who are now proved to be partisan hypocrites will say nothing.

I didn’t watch the video until after I was sure the claim of responsibility was untrue. At that point I realized the sheer stupidity. However, the content of the silly movie is most telling that insane dialogue is the author or cause of chaos . Clearly the religion has attributed very little other than rancid humor.

What language did it air in and what language was spoken by the residents around Benghazi? would be the first question I would ask with a large cigar clenched between my teeth as I played J. Jonah Jameson grilling Peter Parker about his first hair brained story at the Daily Bugle.

  8. Anne R. Pierce

Yes, I’m glad you highlight this, Molly. I woke up today with this worrying me – both the free speech and religious liberty implications and also – if I’m remembering correctly – the subtle way blaming the video allowed the administration to indirectly blame “tea party types” for the Benghazi incident itself. Thus, even this fits in with the stigmatizing and targeting of conservatives.

  9. DrewInWisconsin

While Nakoula Basseley Nakoula remains jailed, supposedly for parole violations, I can’t forget that Hillary publicly declared that we would find those responsible for the video and punish them for it.

She didn’t say we’d punish them for parole violations, did she? She made it clear that any punishment would be due to the video’s alleged role in the Benghazi attack.

And all the while she was spouting this nonsense, she knew it was a lie.

“Prison for Hillary, Freedom for Nakoula!

Every one in this present US administration, from Jay Carney all the way up to the President, regardless of skin color or education, remind me of the boys who lost every school yard fight they were ever in, including the ones against the girls.

Drone strikes are just the bloated taxpayer funded version of remote, radio controlled airplanes for innumerate, reprobate faux executives who have nothing better to do than evade responsibility for every major decision in their lives and stick the engineers with all the heavy lifting like in the BP offshore disaster.

The only global warming threat left on planet earth is the hot air evinced by this administration in their puerile attempt to demonize every one who doesn’t indulge their adolescent mewings for payback time.

There is no threat to religious liberty in the U.S.A.

As long as you worship Gaia, or Vishnu, or Mohammed, or the Democrat Party you have nothing to worry about.  If, like me, you are a member of some bizarre sect like the Lutheran Church, then you might be in trouble.

  12. DrewInWisconsin

This from the Weekly Standard article:

According to Charles Woods, the father of one of the officials killed in the attack, former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, Clinton told him at the same ceremony that the U.S. government would make sure the filmmaker was “arrested and prosecuted.” Pat Smith, the mother of communications specialist Sean Smith, reported that Clinton told her the same thing, “nose to nose.”

As I referenced above, arrested and prosecuted for what, exactly? What did she have in mind? She certainly couldn’t have had “parole violations” in mind.

    Who is Dallin Oaks?  Well, his many accomplishments include;

    • Law professor at the University of Chicago Law school

    • President of Brigham Young University, the largest private university in the US
    • A justice of the Utah Supreme Court
    • A member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of the LDS church

In addition, he has written and spoken extensively about the importance of freedom of religion in our society, which is why the Becket Fund was honoring him.

    He’s a good man.

Not entirely surprising, given my own familiarity with Western living, but he has to be in his early 80s, looks like he’s a good 20 years younger, and is a heck of a public speaker.

This administration should be called F Troop. The F stands for… use Yer imagination.

Are there reporters out there digging into the “stand down” order?  I would think there might be people in the military willing to talk.  This aspect of this whole affair hasn’t received that much attention.
